Remarks
Absolutely the best marine college in the world. Am lucky to be a part of this prestigious institution
Entrance Preview
I have an elder brother who happens to be a marine engineer too. Seeing him always be at the top of life and such a comfortable lifestyle I wanted the same too. So I chose this college owing to its reputation and being my brother's college as well so I didn't have any second thoughts..marine engineering meant imu Kolkata to me
Course Curriculum Overview
The curriculum is apt for the profession as a mariner has to be a jack of all trades as there are no help stations in the sea so we are taught the basics of each aspect of the ship and of electronics, electrical and mechanical engineering as well along with regular workshops and physical training sessions
Internships Opportunities
No. However the camping starts from the 5th sem and if you are lucky enough to get a job then you are allowed to go for a sail on the last semester
Placement Experience
The placements have been deteriorating for the past few years owing to the shortage of ships in our country but still, the scope is immense as compared to other streams only 1 in 1000 engineering students is a marine engineer so you can imagine the odds
College Events
The events in our college are significantly less Owing to the fact that there is only one stream in the college. However, our annual fest TEMPEST is the biggest marine fest in the world and we have numerous events along the year be it the LITHOSPHERE (literature fest) or annual college day
Fee Structure And Facilities
The fee structure is about 9 lakhs in total. If you want to study engineering in a central government college. This is sort of the lowest amount available there and the accommodation and food and all dresses and stationery items are included in the fee
Fees and Financial Aid
Loans are available by the dozens for our college. However, if you are an st or BPL student you get 95k a semester from the college council. Also if you manage to be in the top 60 among all the imu registered colleges then you get to Rs 1 lakh a year
Campus Life
Campus life here is pretty amazing here..what is a bit demeaning is the gender ratio. For 250 guys there are only 3 girls. It is important for girls to get in this stream as well as it is extremely rewarding. Extracurricular activities are a very much important part of our education here with all the year round competitions in debates sports and other engineering activities
Hostel Facilities
The hostel facilities are modest but not like any private institution however the rooms are big and airy. The mess food is quite good surprisingly for a government college and food is in the surplus and the diet is well balanced and quite healthy for the strict physical routine we have to maintain
Alumni/Alumna
The alumni are the source of the college's reputation and they very much want it to be maintained so they are very helpful and the seniors consider it a duty to set the juniors in the correct path and help them in all problems
Exam Structure
There are 8 seems overall with each semester having 2 internals of 10 marks each and a laboratory internal of 25 marks. Each theoretical subject has 30 marks internal marks overall and the rest 70 is determined by pen and paper tests. For practical subjects, the distribution is 50-50
Admission
I gave the imu CET exam for the 2017 exam. The minimum marks for the exam was 65% in PCM. The exam was sort of easy. Only class 12th questions were asked to which I did well and hence my rank came at air 553 and I was in the first list for the college after the results were declared. Then we had to submit 10k for the admission procedure and once we booked the seats. After a brief physical assessment, we were incorporated into the college
Faculty
The faculty is top of the range as nearly all the professors are either ex-seamen or highly sought after faculties of different streams to teach us the basics of electronics or be it electrical.. They are highly trained individuals who impart us with great knowledge of the ship and the course as well
