Remarks
As it is, IIT Roorkee truly is one of the best engineering colleges in the country. College management is helpful and understanding. It is an honor to be an alumnus of IIT Roorkee.
Entrance Preview
IIT Roorkee is one of the most prestigious and the oldest college in the country. I was getting a branch of my interests in the college which was an add-on. The weather and the location of the college make it more attractive. My cousin guided me through this.
Course Curriculum Overview
My course was Electronics & Communication Engineering. The freshers year had the same subjects for all the students so as to get an overall view of all the branches. The remaining three years had respective technical courses with an elective course to be chosen each semester from various departments. The course was technically structured with subjects and topics spatially balanced. A couple of semesters were bit hectic, apart from that it was easy to manage extracurriculars along with studies.
Internships Opportunities
A few departments provide internship facilities such Computer Science Department, Department of Mathematics etc. While few individual professors also take interns during summers. The stipend is usually not provided to undergraduate students, but there is a variable amount of stipend for PhD students.
Placement Experience
Even if you have been an average student throughout the college period and have scored decently, there are very high chances of getting placed. The placement rates are high, almost all the students get placed barring those who voluntarily choose not to in light of higher studies or entrepreneurship. Almost all big companies across all the engineering fields along with consultancies and finance based companies visit the campus for the placement process which starts on 1st December every year.
College Events
There's an annual cultural fest-Thomson. An annual Technical Fest- Cognizance. This event is coupled with Departmental Cognizance organized by each department separately. There is an inter-IIT sports meet which is conducted every year in one of the old 7 IITs on a rotation basis. There are numerous small events such as Sangram, iFest, SPIC-MACAY events.
Fees and Financial Aid
Merit cum Means Scholarship for top 25% students of each branch with the weaker financial background. Scholarship for students from Sciences streams such as Mathematics, Chemistry, etc. Lian facilities are provided by the banks inside the campus only.
Campus Life
Campus life is the best part of college. The campus is absolutely safe and being in Roorkee, having a large number of trees, the weather remains pleasant. The gender ratio is very much skewed in favor of boys but has been improving slowly. Good opportunities in all the fields, a large number of student groups to encourage co-curricular and extra-curricular activities help in the overall development of the student.
Hostel Facilities
The hostel facilities vary depending on the hostel. Few new hostels have been built which have decent facilities. While the older hostels are spacious but lack proper internet connectivity. Mess food is similar to as you would expect in a government college. It is not good and very occasionally the food is liked by students. But slowly one gets habitual to it.
Exam Structure
My initial years had two mid-semester exams and an end term exam for each course. Later it was changed to a single Mid Term Examination followed by an End Term Examination. Some of the courses had Lab Examinations too. Almost all the courses have requirements for assignment submission.
Admission
The entrance procedure in 2010 was different from as it is now. There was a minimum requirement of 60% marks in the 12th Board or equivalent examination. Then there was a test IIT-JEE (JEE Advanced now). Based on marks in the examination, selected students were given ranks which were followed by a counseling procedure for choosing the college and the requisite branch.
Faculty
The faculty at the college is top-notch. The professors and tutors were highly experienced with a few very young professors. A mix of both provided an environment for students to assess old techniques and methods while the young professors encouraged innovative ideas.
