What Students Say
Likes
- Good atmosphere as it is nearly 10 kms away from the main Silchar City.
- Tonnes of events and occassions to constantly keep you entertained throughout your journey of 4 years.
- Beautiful, neat and clean campus and also housing the phenomenal 2nd largest Digital Library in Asia.
Dislikes
- Classes aren't scheduled properly and becomes hectic for the non-hostelers.
- Labs aren't maintained well and so is the case with other colleges as well so you need not to worry.
- Marking scheme is a bit confusing as because professors let their scholars check the exam paper and they themselves don't know many things.
Course Curriculum Overview
I choose Civil because of the immense amount of govt. jobs I can go for. The curriculum is well-equipped with real life applications as because you'll be able to use the course knowledge during your internships and it feels really good to apply the bookish knowledges in real life. The course was overall good so I don't think any improvement is needed. The exams were held twice a semester within a duration of 1-2 months so we get the time to study so there's no problem with that.
Internships Opportunities
Internships can be done under any professor if you like or any other private firm according to the liking of student. But the professors does provide a rigorous internship planning running for around 6 weeks with assignments and homeworks but you get to learn a lot outside your academics.
Placement Experience
The placements are superb in one word. You can seat in placements from the start of 4th year until exam result declaration day. Lot of top companies visit NIT Silchar like, Google, Adani, TATA, and many other big IT giant multinational companies. Around 80-90% student get placements in NIT across all branches. The highest package offered was to the ECE and CSE branch which was 63 LPA and average across all the branch is around 18-20 lacs a year.
Fees and Financial Aid
The fee structure include all the following like 1. Transportation 2. Tuition etc (Many others) and it sums up to a total of 68000 per semester or around 136000 per year. But this fees even increased to 72000 once so the total fees for 1 year was 144000 approx. So yes the fees does change and goes up and down. NOTE - I was from Silchar itself so I didn't take Hostels but there were Hostels in my college and students had to pay 19000 per semester or 38000 per year for the hostels. Summing all the expenditure, you'll have to have a budget of nearly 7,00,000-8,00,000 to be able to study in NIT Silchar, FEE WAIVER - NIT Silchar does have Scholarship opportunities but that too for those whose family annual income is less than 5,00,000 (i'm not sure of exact value) and others we had waiver for less than 1 lac a year students, 1-5 lac a year students and the reservation benefits where the SC/ST/EWS guys had to pay a lot lesser than others. So if you are an SC/ST/EWS candidate then you can study with a budget of even 50,000 or maybe less than this amount.
Campus Life
The campus life was good. Met a lot of friends, new people, had good moments and stressed moments as well. It was a part of life that can never be forgotten. Technoesis, Razmataz, Obetivo etc are some of the biggest events in NIT to have a lot of fun with. Talking about sports, we have sport events as well where we get to play a lot of sports from badminton to chess etc. There are tonnes of social groups at NIT and anybody can be a part of it as it helps in resume building.
Admission
I choose NIT Silchar because 1. It's ranked 7th in the list of top NITs. 2. It is close to my home. I applied for all the top NITs but I put NIT Silchar in 1st priority during JOSAA counselling. The admission process in NIT Silchar is straight where we need to qualify JEE Mains and then seat in JOSAA counselling and if you get NIT Silchar then rest everything will be done automatically where the college will inform you everything step-by-step.
Faculty
Talking about faculty, there's a decent amount of faculty tbh and there are 20% faculties who teach really well, 50-60% professors teach in average level and rest just makes you fall asleep. The faculty I liked the most are Aminul Islam Laskar sir as he was my project guide and helped me a lot in the project in the last semester and his teaching is just wow. The faculty I didn't like can't be disclosed here but the reason why I didn't like them was obviously their teaching style and inequal behaviour with the students by favouring the toppers and let go off others. The course structure is kind of rigorous with assignments and exams throughout the semester. There are two major exams with 30 marks in mid sem and 50 marks in end sem and rest 10-10 marks are for attendance and assignments respectively. The exams are on easy-average level if you do the previous year otherwise you won't be able to finish the exam on time as the exams are a bit lengthy for majority,
Night Life
The nightlife is awesome with students roaming around in the campus, gossiping and walking around the beautiful green campus. There is also a gym where everybody is allowed to have some muscles grow up and the library is just wow as it is the 2nd largest digital library in Asia. The best hangout place is the momo bhaiya just outside the campus near the intersection and also the T-point inside the campus where it is always crowded with students.
