B.Tech at JIST

The infrastucture and placements are very poor in the college. Maybe it is due to lack of funds from the State government. This is huge negative of the college. You have to mostly depend on yourself for your future.

The course curriculum has been revised and the theoretical part has been reduce to focus more on practical knowledge. Overall the syllabus is very good and only downside is the inclusion of sociology which is completely unrelated to engineering. Exams are conducted at the end of each semester with theory paper for each subject consisting of 70 marks. The rest of the 30 marks are given as internal assesment.

Currently the training and placement facility at JIST is very poor. There are very few companies that come to our college(JIST) and only about 20 students out of 200 get placed. The salary received is also not high enough and that is a huge problem.

During February college week is celebrated in which varoius competitions like sports, singing, dance are organized. In April Abeyaantrix Techfest is celebrated where sports, games, competitions as well as bands come to sing and DJ night is also held. Apart from these Teacher's day and Freshers are celebrated during September

Jorhat Institute of Science and Technology is a Govt. College. Hence the fees is feasible and they only charge around Rs. 5000 per semester pus additional expenses like registration fees, exam fees, bus fees etc.

The college offered a scholarship based on marks in CEE for which top 10 students in each branch got Rs. 750 each and apart from that UGC offers Ishan Uday scholarship for students based on their merit in HS exam.

College week is conducted once a year and apart from that extra curricular activities are also conducted during Abeyyantrix Techfest in March/April every year. The activities include cricket, football, video games, dance and singing competitions, Robowar.

I have not opted for hostel. There are four hostels in total. Three hostels are for boys while one hostel is for girls. The hostel food is not very good and most of my friends complain about the food as well as room conditions.

The senior students are not very helpful. The union board that has been elected has not done anything helpful for the students. They mostly keep their own interests in mind and do not raise questions on the needs of the college like more buses, atm facility etc.

First I passed my 12th exam. Then I appeared for CEE entrance exam conducted in Assam. Merit list was published after one month. I had to attend counselling at Assam Engineering Institute, Guwahati. Seat was allotted on the basis of marks in CEE. Then I had to attend my college(JIST) to complete my admission.

The faculty of mathematics and mechanics subjects are very decent but the chemistry and physics teachers could be better. Mostly the permanent faculty members do not take classes classes of 1st and 2nd Semester. The sociology teacher is not very good.
