Remarks
IITR is a very vibrant campus with everyone busy doing something in academics or extra-curricular or sports. Any kinds of physical or mental abuse don't happen here and everyone respects each other. I haven't witnessed any kind of fighting or quarrel between students. The culture here will drive you to materialistic success in life. There is a lot of competition here and always some people will be ahead of you in some sense. So, many times, you need to ignore what others are doing and focus on your development. Being a professional institute, People here are a bit proffesional and true friendship very rarely exists here. 99% of the people are good at their heart but the friendship which i have with my school friends, I didn't find here.
Course Curriculum Overview
The course curriculum is much outdated but professors and various committees are working to update it with current requirements. The course syllabus will mostly take you through old engineering techniques and basics. Though basics are important you don't real-life problems. The curriculum is made in a way to develop an attitude to solve problems.
Placement Experience
Placements are the one thing which is best about IIT Roorkee or any old IIT. There is phase 1 of 10- 15 days in December and 80% of students in the college who had prepared a bit for placements get placed with an average package of 14 lacks. But there is a harsh reality that most of the companies are of IT Industry. Very few core companies visit the campus. Phase 2 Placement takes place in March and more than 90% of the students gets placed. Getting placed is the easiest thing here. It will hardly 2 months of hard work to get placed with a good package.
College Events
There is a long list of events celebrated here.Thomso is a 3-Day Annual Cultural Fest. Various singing, dancing, fashion, writing, movie-making, competitions, and workshops take place with cash prizes and benefits. The budget for Thomso is around 1.5 crores. Cognizance is a 3-day Annual technical fest. Sangram is the Annual sports fest. A 2-Day National Social Summit is celebrated to discuss and resolve various social issues. Various personalities visit and give talks. A 2-day event pertaining to the Entrepreneurship competition is celebrated once a year. Apart from this, all festivals including Holi, Diwali, Eid are celebrated in campus with enthusiasm.
Fee Structure And Facilities
The Fee Structure is rigid and applies the same to all. The listed fee is for each semester. Hostel & Mess fees is around 26000 Per Semester. Those having Family Income more than 5 Lacks - 100,000 Tuition Fees + Hostel & Mess. Those having family income more than 1 Lacks but less than 5 Lacks - 33,000 Tuition Fees + Hostel & Mess Fee. Those having family income less than 1 lacks or belong to SC/ST category - Zero tuition Fee + Hostel & Mess Fee. Banks provide loans very easily for students studying in IIT,so, it is feasible for everyone to pay the fees.
Fees and Financial Aid
MCM ( MERIT- CUM - MEANS SCHOLARSHIP) is one of the scholarships offered by the institute. Those having income below 5 lacks and are in TOP 25% of their branch are eligible for it. Benefits- Reimbursement of tuition fee + 5000(pocket money) per semester. Other than this, there are various scholarships in the name of Alumni or Companies which are offered to eligible students. The scholarship is offered on the basis of performance in college and personal interviews. Banks provide loans to students in IIT very easily and the Central govt has a plan under which interest paid can be claimed.
Campus Life
There is too much scope for extracurricular activities in IIT ROORKEE. In fact, you will forget to study as there are so many activities going on on campus at once. There are a lot active of non-technical and technical groups related to Writing, Painting, Dancing, Singing, Robotics, Computers, AI, etc. You can be involved in any group and spend your time learning new things. Sports has too much priority in R-Land. There is a separate ground for Football, Hockey, Cricket. Separate court for Badminton, Squash, Tennis.
Hostel Facilities
IIT ROORKEE is rank 1 in the hostel according to me. There are both single and double rooms for First Yearites which are alloted according to Rank and Category. The size of the room is more than sufficient. There is an almirah, table, and chair for every student with a balcony. Second Year Onwards, every student enjoy their single rooms. There are 11 Boys hostels, 3 girls hostels, and 6 married hostels.3 of the boy's hostels(Rajiv Bhawan, Radhakrishnan Bhawan, Vigyan Kunj) are multi-story new buildings and equipped with lift and all kinds of facilities.
Alumni/Alumna
On normal days, you don't get to contact any alumni unless you are required to do so. There is a seperate group in college, IARC(Institute Alumni Relations Cell) which manages the relation with Alumni and maintains their records, contacts, and current positions. Though it depends on you, how you make relation with any person Seniors at IITR are very very helpful. You may knock on their door anytime for any help and they don't deny it. No ragging takes place on the campus. They will help you regarding anything(literally).
Admission
I cleared JEE MAINS with CRL(Common Rank List) 9197 and then JEE ADVANCED with CRL 1826 with this rank, I had various options before me in IITs but I choose to be in Roorkee. Admissions are managed by JOSAA. Candidates have to fill their choices in priority order, the one he is eligible for is allotted.
Faculty
Faculties here are highly qualified and are having a lot of experience in their respective field. They have vast knowledge about the subject, but very few of the professors are fit to teach. Most professors don't have the art of teaching and delivering knowledge to students. If you are interested then any faculty will be happy to help you in any sense like research or project.
