Review of IIT Kharagpur

The campus is located very far from the main city kolkata. The campus life is decent with various opportunities. Coming to my department, the course structure is old and not meeting the current practical standards which needs much improvement. Even though we are reviewing our faculties and department every semester to improve the course structure, they didn't took any measures to change.

City Planning course is a general course with vast diversity that deals with urban and regional problems and their management through identifying suitable & logical solutions to complex urban problems that includes urban planning, transportation planning, infrastructure planning, solid waste management, water supply, sanitation, urban governance, urban policies, etc.

The placements for masters is Nil in our department as the course is more service oriented and not corporate type. We have to search for our jobs after graduating. The opportunities are limited but the jobs are challenging which reflect on the city's lifestyle.

1. Students freshers and farewells. 2. Department wise cultural fests( small scale). 3. Kshitij - annual techno fest ( inter colleges level) 4. Spring fest - annual cultural fest ( celebrities will be called to entertain).

For post graduation is feasible it cost around 1.65 lakhs per two years. Each student will get a monthly stipend of Rs. 12,400/- during the course period subjective to teaching assistant duty of 8hours per week.

Post graduate students only get monthly stipend of Rs. 12,400/- subjective to CGPA=>6.5 and weekly 8 hours Teaching assistant work. Student can avail loan facilities from campus banks SBI or PNB through vidyalakshmi scheme which are interest free for a certain period. With the monthly stipend one can save money pay for the fee without taking loans also.

Various extra curricular activity clubs are there in student community and improve our passion towards those. Inter hall sports, inter Institute sports are conducted every year. Sport facilities are very good.

Hostel infrastructure and facilities are good, but the maintenance is very bad. One will get either double or triple occupancy for post graduates. Internet facility is unlimited with 10mbps speed. Hostel mess food is acceptable. There are many food courts and restaurants inside the campus.

Alumni network for few departments is very good. For our department it is very low interaction between alumni and current post graduate students. For bachelor students placements are good because of the alumni.

Appeared for GATE 2018 during my final year of Graduation and scored 632 score out of 1000. Then applied for the course through Institute PG admission portal. Institute will verify our application details and then select based upon the merit list of GATE score. I secured the admission in first round of admission offers by the Institute.

Faculty was good, all of them have PhD. All of them are mostly into research oriented and allow students to get into research to solve complex problems. 2nd year masters students and PhD students are allotted as Teaching assistants to faculties.
