What Students Say
Likes
- Quality Teaching and Education: The teaching methods consisted of lectures and seminars, both of which were really engaging and informative. The modules under my course were absolutely simulating both in terms of academic richness and vocational perspective.
- Research Driven Atmosphere: Most instructors heavily relied on current trends and evidence-based practices when it came to teaching and assignments, it really helped me to skim recent scientific literature and critically appraise them which is transferable for my professional journey.
- Infrastructure: My university and school of sport (Carnegie School of Sport) ranks within Top 5 sports school when it comes to research contribution mainly due its state of the art infrastructure which consists of highly equipped labs for practical sessions and aesthetically pleasing lecture halls with great facilities like 24/7 wifi access, access to various scientific journals both available online and offline respectively.
Dislikes
- High Tuition fees: Although compared to different universities for the same course, the tuition fees is usually higher but still tuition fees along with high accommodation costing is something that is really an issue to think about.
- Placements: Most universities in the UK, like mine, don't guarantee you with placements, even though we pay such a high amount of tuition fees, but landing a Job is fairly on one's skills, hard work and luck.
- Scholarships: However, I have been a top student with high grades in my bachelors additionally with my masters where I had received distinction and Dean's prize for Academic Excellence there are far less options for me to secure any. scholarships/funding for my PhD which really sucks.
Course Curriculum
- I would say that modules in the course were fairly tough and were specialised according to the demand of the course I have chosen, and related to the prospects of the profession while also touching various other perspectives such as Bio-mechanists, Exercise Physiologists etc. Moreover, my course was a mic of both practical and theoretical learning, in labs and lecture halls.
- As stated earlier, initially the positives and negatives that stand out to me is educational purpose that the degree has served me, along with that placement opportunities would have made it more sound for students like me,
- Usually one or two classes, but 3-4 days a week with a mix of practical seminars and theoretical lectures or Online webinars as well.
- I had quite a lot Indian students in my course, roughly about 40-45 Indian students.
Admission Experience
- I applied to various universities in Canada and the UK, within Canada I applied to the McMaster University where I did get shortlisted and interviewed but the professor did not have enough funding to my project further under his lab, so I had to reject the offer.
I applied to the Manchester Metropolitan in the UK, from which I got rejected since I did not 2 years of work experience.
I applied to the University of Liverpool, Loughborough, University of Portsmouth, University of Leeds, and Leeds Beckett University, University of Central Lancashire.. I accepted Leeds Beckett because of its reputation and fairly affordable tuition fees, along with syllabus/modules compared to other options.
I chose Leeds Beckett over others because,
1. Reputed Institution with great infrastructure and better ranking within the UK.
2. Leeds being an amazing multi-cultural city and with an affordable Cost of Living.
3. Syllabus/modules over much better when compared to other institutions. - Admission process; IELTS (Min. 6.5 each), References, Work Experience, Statement of Purpose.. all should be related to the course that you have chosen to, sometimes they do waive off interview for exemplary applications.. I did not have to give one fortunately.
- Overall, the admission process was fairly easy but the most frustrating bit was the issuance of the CAS letter, which is an important document for you to file your visa application.. that took almost over a month for me to come.. and most students had to wait for more than 45 days.
- I applied for the September intake, I wanted to establish an year long work experience back in India which made me choose the September intake especially, because my course also did not have January intake in most Universities. The admission process almost took 2-3 months in total from filling out my application form in April then getting my decision in May 2023, and later applying for my CAS letter, later receiving it in June 2023.
Faculty
- We had a fairly nice faculty to student ratio, both in lectures and seminars, especially with the seminars which were arranged in a batch of 20-25 students with one instructors.. which allowed us to strengthen our understanding on the topics taught during lectures through active discussion and drawing from experiences of the other students and instructors.
- I guess the modules taught to us has been really relevant when it comes to practicing in the market and yes fortunately the learning has helped me to earn my licencing for pitch side trauma management and an active job at a football club, though I am open to bigger and better opportunities.
Campus Life
- We had two campuses, one located in the City centre called City Campus fairly accessible and the other one was Headingley Campus based in Headingley with mostly. it, hospitality and sports related courses.
- We had all facilities such as library, sports facilities, and medical services based on the both campuses.
- Major events would be fresher's fair, fresher's party and monthly/weekly events run by global village community during festivals etc.
- We had loads of opportunities within the extracurricular activities such as sports, cultural events, student organizations including student union elections, parties and relevant. events. with diwali, holi and navratri.
Part Time Jobs
- Securing Teaching Assistant (TA), Research Assistant (RA), or Departmental Assistant (DA) positions is fairly difficult for normal taught courses, one needs to be enrolled within a research oriented course.
- It ranges particularly from the hourly wage of 13.45/hr or maybe monthly depending on the funding of the research project/lab.
- Usual hourly wages are 11.44/hr for most jobs likes ambassadors or other hospitality jobs in the university kitchen for students.
- 11.44 plus tips, if the jobs has any. It can be fairly difficult for some to get any good part time jobs to suit their studying needs.. but most jobs look for confidence, experience in customer service and good communication skills and language abilities. They can look over indeed, reed jobs or hospitality. agencies for casual work with good money opportunities.
Placement
- 20-30% of my batchmates have landed jobs in their fields and some are in the process of landing ones.. it fairly depends on the industry in which one is looking for the jobs.. people who suffer mostly are the ones doing management jobs, manufacturing jobs, IT roles, it is highly competitive.
- There are no campus recruitments at my universities, most relevant methods would be networking and making relations with hiring teams/managers and constantly trying for roles. NHS could be one of the biggest employers for physiotherapists, and many private clinics like Bodyset, Pure physiotherapy.
Accommodation
- I found my accommodation through a recommendation made by a college senior who has lived their previously when she was a student at my University.
- My monthly rent inclusive of all bills was 149 GBP/Week or 630 GBP/month, I did not face any challenges finding an accommodation.. I booked it in June 2023 after I received my. CAS letter.
- It was 15 mins (1mi) away from my City campus where 45% of classes were held and 35mins walking (2.5mi) 15 mins from buses; from my accommodation.
- To be honest, my accommodation had a lot of Indian students too, but most of them live in Headingley, Woodhouse, Hyde park areas with house share facilities.
Exams
- IELTS is mandatory to fulfil language obligations, with a minimum of 6.5 in each section of the test. Statement of purpose highlighting the key necessities required for the course is essential along with that LORs by college professors/principal, and one professional is required. A CV within the ATS format and Cover letter is essential, in order to make the decision making easier.
- It was a formal interview for the University of Central Lancashire, which I later chose not to go.. they just asked formal introductory questions, as what I have done yet academically and professionally, why this course and university, what modules interests me more and why, some basic physiotherapy based questions, it was fairly easy and yes if you're confident and know what you're actually into you do get selected
Fees
- Since, my course was a masters course (postgraduate taught course) an year long course hence my fees was 16000 GBP.. and had to be paid within one go method (prior to the September) after accepting the Acceptance/Offer letter or could be paid in two instalments (once in Sept and then one no later than January i.e. before the second semester).
- Estimation of the monthly expenses is highly dependable, although I lived in the students which are relatively on the higher end, but I wanted to experience this and was an amazing one.. it was around 630 GBP bills included (Rent, Electricity, Gas, Wifi etc); but my friends had taken over cheaper options such as flat share, house share with inclusive packages ranging from 450 GBP-580 GBP. So it really depends on the students making their own choices about housing etc..
- As for groceries the average costs for a month was around 180-250 GBP, travel expenses were not that much for me, as I lived at walking distance to the Uni, and we had shuttle buses to travel between campuses which were absolutely free of cost.
- Travelling and outing costs about around 100-120 GBP, again depending on person to person.
Scholarship
- I did receive an automatic scholarship of 3000 GBP being an international student, and did receive another one later for 1500 GBP for excellence in academics in my Bachelors degree.
- No, internationals did not receive any scholarships other than the international one ie. 3000 GBP one, but of course nationals do receive financial aid and student money from the UK government. I am not sure on this, but in order to get these scholarships, one has to be really sure about the university from the beginning filling out the applications for these scholarships.. as they usually start prior and has short deadline periods.
