Course Curriculum

10

  • The difficulty of my course curriculum was moderate according to me. The professors would go through each topic in the lectures with students. But it was less theoretical and more about real-life examples and practical activities to understand those concepts.
  • The most positive aspect, of course, was that the course director and faculty were extremely helpful and the course was very well designed. It pushed every student to do their individual research and then write their assignments. The most negative part was that few things remained unclear, as most of the communication about cancelled or delayed lectures happened through updating the portal called MyBeckett. There was no formal mailer sent to the students informing the same.
  • 3-4 lectures are typically scheduled in a day. And timings start from 9 AM until 6 PM BST.
  • In my batch there were around 20 students.
  • Approx. 12 students were Indian in my batch.

Admission Experience

  • I applied to the University of East Anglia, the University of Cumbria and Leeds Beckett University.
  • I was shortlisted in all 3 of them.
  • I received confirmed admission from all 3.
  • I wasn’t rejected by any of the universities I applied to, but one common cause of rejection amongst international students is their IELTS score or educational or professional gap.
  • I chose Leeds Beckett University because it offers a hands-on, industry-relevant curriculum in MBA, which really appealed to me. The balance between theory and practical application, especially through work placements and real-world projects, set it apart from other universities I considered. Leeds Beckett’s strong industry links and career support services made me confident that I would be well-prepared for life after graduation.
  • I applied for the fall intake, as it’s the main intake. The fresh courses start in September.
  • The admission process at Leeds Beckett University (LBU) typically takes around 6 weeks from the submission of your application to receiving an offer, provided all required documents are complete and there are no additional requirements. However, if your course has a specific application deadline, the university will usually wait until this date has passed before considering all applications together .

Faculty

10

  • If there are 100 students in total, they were typically divided into 5 batches. So then there were 2-3 lecturers provided for all these batches. The lecturers would take classes at different times throughout the day for all these batches.
  • The teaching methodology was informative and engaging. Faculties often used examples of real-world scenarios to help us understand any concept. One must do their own research and homework to develop relevant skills to secure a job.
  • Yes, if asked. Many faculties are very helpful and they do tend to extend a helping hand to help you find jobs.
  • I admired my course director, Mr Garry Carr. He was also my faculty for a course module called Strategic Management. He was one of the best lecturers; he made sure every student is engaged and understanding the concepts and at the same time, he was very helpful when asked for the feedback on assignments, etc.

Campus Life

10

  • My university has two main campuses; one is the City campus (Rose Bowl), located in the city centre and the other is Headingley campus, located in headingley.
  • The campuses have libraries with access to books and laptops on loan; they have a little bar too called “ The Hive”, a cafeteria, study rooms, conference rooms, access to mental health support, access to IT support, and medical support.
  • The major campus festival was the fresher’s week; it holds multiple activities to welcome new students throughout the week. Even old students can be a part of it. Holi, navratri dandiya, diwali are some of the occasions celebrated at the campus by the international community.
  • There are a number of extracurricular activities, like cricket and football, cultural events, and networking events called Accelerate to join and network with people. Then there are elections for Student president, etc.

Part Time Jobs

  • Typically only a few Indian students are able to secure such jobs. The number may be below 10. The pay ranges from 17k GBP to 24k GBP.
  • Other jobs available for students are administrative jobs and the hourly wages range from 11 GBP to 15 GBP an hour.
  • For students, the limit to work per week is 20 hours; for graduates, it is 40 hours. But one can work more hours on a graduate visa if they wish to.
  • It is moderately difficult, as there is a lot of competition amongst students.
  • Students typically make 13-14 GBP an hour and if they work for 20 hours a week, they can make 280 GBP. So monthly income ranges from 1000 to 1200 GBP. It is moderately difficult for students to get part-time jobs while studying, as the jobs are fewer compared to the number of students living in leeds and looking for work. But yet after trying at a few places, one can get a part-time job.
  • Part time job search includes looking for opportunities on the web, such as jobs at restaurants like McDonald’s, Subway, Pizza hut, etc. They can apply online by submitting their resume and can also give reference to anyone working there, if they know them. Then if they are selected, they are called to give interviews on-site and the rest follows.

Placement

8

  • Approx. 80% of students get employed within 6 months of graduating.
  • The salary ranges between 25000 GBP and 40000 GBP.
  • Students typically secure jobs through job fairs held by the university on campus; it is not campus placement but a great opportunity to meet employers and network with them by sharing the resume and profile details with them. Students also get help by networking with batchmates in job seeking; LinkedIn is also a helpful tool.
  • My friends were placed in banks like HSBC, Barclays, Lloyds Bank, Yorkshire Building Society, EY, etc. Their placement experience was great. The interviews were a bit challenging but if you have the relevant skills and you are prepared enough, there are high chances of getting the job offer.

Accommodation

Off Campus
6

  • I found my accommodation through apps like SpareRoom. They offer properties to rent for students.
  • My monthly rent was 500 GBP. It included electricity and gas bills. The property offered a personal room with a single bed, almirah, study table, shared bathroom, kitchen and living room.
  • The only challenge was to find a guarantor for myself. My letting agent asked me to pay 6 months' rent upfront or find someone who can be my guarantor so that I don’t miss out on any rent payments. I chose to pay 6 months of rent upfront.
  • Future students should use apps like SpareRoom to find accommodation; they can also visit real estate agent’s offices. But the best is online apps. Make sure to know what is being promised before finalising any property and ensure there are no hidden charges.
  • My accommodation was 15 mins away by walk from my campus. Most Indian students either stay in Trinity Accommodation hall or near hyde park in private houses.

Exams

  • IELTS is required
  • The documents required are Statement of Purpose, a CV, and educational certificates like marksheets for 10th, 12th and Graduation.
  • Interview is a part of the application process; it’s typically taken by the South Asian admission team member of LBU. The nature of the interview is very basic questions asked to students, such as, Why did they choose LBU to study? Why did they choose to take on an MBA as a course? What are their plans after they graduate? What makes them interested in pursuing higher education in the UK?
  • It’s important to show the sincerity and honesty in choosing the university amongst all others. One must have clear goals in mind and honest intentions about moving to the UK. It greatly affects the admission acceptance probability.

Fees

  • Tuition fee – 15 lacs
  • Hostel – 10 lacs
  • The fees at the university are charged in 2 halves. One can pay the fee in one go, should they wish to. But majorly the fee is paid in 2 instalments. If anyone is struggling to pay the fee in 2 instalments as well, they can speak to the administration, and they can put a pay plan in place for them.
  • Rent per month – 500 Gbp, Transport – 70 GBP, Groceries – 100 GBP, Miscellaneous – 100 GBP

Scholarship

  • Yes, I did receive a scholarship of 2.5 lacs and that was given to me because my academic record was excellent. My scores for English language in particular for 12th grade were great. Hence, 2.5 lacs of the total fee was waived for me. Eligibility criteria vary from student to student, but if one is academically eligible, they are more likely to receive this scholarship.
  • Approx. 20000 students each year receive this scholarship and the typical amount varies between 1 lac and 5 lacs.
