BHU BA {Hons.} (Economics) FAQs

Ques. Why does BA (Hons.) Economics at BHU main campus have only 6 seats?

Ans. The main campus of BHU offers a very limited number of seats (6) for BA (Hons.) Economics, making it one of the most exclusive undergraduate Economics programmes in India. This is because BHU's main campus focuses on quality over quantity, and the Department of Economics at the main campus is highly selective. Students who miss the main campus cutoff can consider BHU's affiliated colleges, which offer more seats.

Ques. Is BA (Hons.) Economics at BHU better than B.Sc. (Hons.) Economics?

Ans. BHU offers Economics under the Faculty of Social Sciences (BA Hons.) and also as part of B.Sc. programmes. The BA (Hons.) Economics focuses more on theoretical and applied economics with social science perspectives, while B.Sc. Economics has a stronger quantitative and mathematical orientation. For students aiming for MA Economics, IES, or research, both are equally valid. For MBA or management careers, BA Economics is equally suitable.

Ques. How competitive is the CUET cutoff for BA (Hons.) Economics at BHU?

Ans. BA (Hons.) Economics is among the most competitive BA programmes at BHU due to its very limited seats. In 2025, the General category CUET cutoff was 328 in Round 1. EWS cutoff was 309, OBC NCL was 308, SC was 258, and ST was 224. In 2024, the General cutoff was even higher at 333. Students must score very high in CUET to secure one of the 6 main campus seats.

Ques. What are the career options after BA (Hons.) Economics from BHU?

Ans. Career options include MA Economics, MBA, Indian Economic Service (IES), civil services (UPSC with Economics optional), banking (RBI, NABARD), research, teaching (after UGC NET), and data analytics. BHU's Economics graduates have a strong track record in competitive exams and higher studies at premier institutions.

Ques. Can students from Commerce or Science background apply for BA (Hons.) Economics at BHU?

Ans. Yes, students from any stream who have passed 10+2 with at least 50% marks and have appeared in CUET UG can apply. Students who have studied Economics at the 10+2 level will have an advantage in the CUET Economics paper. There is no stream restriction for admission.

Ques. What is the difference between studying Economics at BHU main campus vs. affiliated colleges?

Ans. The main campus has only 6 seats and a much higher CUET cutoff, but offers direct access to BHU's Department of Economics faculty, research facilities, and the central library. Affiliated colleges (like DAV PG College, Vasanta College, MMV) have more seats, slightly lower cutoffs, and higher fees, but the degree is awarded by BHU and the curriculum is the same. For research and higher studies, the main campus is preferred.

Fees and Financial Aid:

I'm in one of the co-ed registered college of the BHU, DAV PG College. The annual fees is relatively higher than that of BHU main campus. In the first year I paid something around 10.5k rupees and then around 6600 rupees in the second and third year. The fees as I think don't vary based on the categories for SC, ST & OBC. Everyone had to pay same.

The fee structure of the college is very much friendly to all the students. Even the lower class people can afford it based on their knowledge and intelligence. The tuition of my college for one annual year is 8000 which is relatively very short amount if compared to other universities. Moreover, there is always opportunities for scholarships available in the college which helps the students to grow significantly . I personally have not taken any job roles in the college yet.
