Overall Reddit discussions on Brown University’s cost of living housing in Providence, Rhode Island:
- Costly overall, but cheaper than major cities: Students say Providence is cheaper than Boston or NYC, but still expensive. The total annual cost (including tuition) is often called “insane,” around $90,000–$97,000, especially for international students.
- Housing is the biggest challenge: Off-campus rent near College Hill is high ($1,100–$1,700/month for studios). Even shared on-campus graduate housing can exceed $1,300/month. Finding affordable housing is competitive and often requires searching months in advance.
- Food & daily expenses add up: Campus dining is seen as expensive. Monthly non-housing costs typically range from $300–$800, depending on lifestyle.
- International Students Feel the Strain Most: Many master’s students receive little or no financial aid. Live farther from campus, cook at home, use part-time campus jobs, or stay on-campus in the first year for convenience despite higher cost.
Brown University Scholarships
Brown University offers financial support to international students primarily through need-based institutional aid for undergraduates and guaranteed funding packages for doctoral (PhD) students. Brown's undergraduate financial aid is need-based only; no merit scholarships are available.
For graduate students, incoming PhD students receive a multi-year funding guarantee that includes stipends, tuition remission, and health insurance subsidies. Master's programs are largely self-funded, with no central university scholarships or guaranteed aid.
International students can check the external scholarships for the USA and apply to a suitable one.
Did you know? Starting with applicants entering in fall 2025 (Class of 2029), Brown is need-blind for first-year international undergraduates, meaning financial need does not affect admission decisions. Moreover, the university meets 100% of demonstrated need for admitted students who apply for aid, using grants (not loans) to cover costs like tuition, fees, room, board, books, travel, and personal expenses.
Brown University Graduate Outcomes
Brown University delivers strong post-graduation outcomes, combining Ivy League brand equity with a flexible academic model. As per Brown’s latest reported data:
- Placement Rate (within 6 months): ~93–96% of graduates employed, in graduate school, or engaged in fellowships/service programs
- Median Starting Salary: ~USD $85,000–$90,000/₹78.71 to 83.34 lakhs (varies by major; STEM and Economics are often higher)
- Top Salary Bands: Computer Science, Engineering, Applied Math-Economics frequently exceed $100,000+ median starting compensation
For Indian students evaluating ROI, this salary range significantly offsets the total cost of attendance, especially when entering high-demand sectors like tech, consulting, finance, and healthcare.

Ques: What is student life like at Brown University? Is it stressful?
Ans: Most students describe Brown as academically rigorous but flexible. Thanks to the Open Curriculum, students can choose what they study instead of following fixed core subjects. However, the high cost of living and limited funding for master’s students can be challenging. Students recommend planning housing early and budgeting carefully.

Essays are used to understand your thinking style, interests, and fit with Brown’s Open Curriculum. Interviews (when offered) are informal and meant to know you better, not to test knowledge. - Campus Buildings - Really amazing architecture and facilities including lecture halls, sports areas and a gym.
- Libraries - Rockefeller Library is the best; it is very peaceful and has elegant architecture.
- People - diverse and quite intriguing set of students of any community, open for collaboration and learning.
Dislikes
- Cold Weather - It gets too cold in winter difficult to commute even a small distance
- Strict teaching policies in some courses
- Throughout involvement in academic content is a must but the coursework is generally easy
Campus Life
- Only one campus in Providence, and libraries, lecture halls, hospital and other buildings are amazing and quite architecturally elegant.
- GCB is a nice hangout place for students; there are lots of clubs nearby, and there are several brown-specific festivals that take place, but I didn’t get involved in the campus life, particularly among undergraduates. The campus life is quite happening.
Fees
- Semester-wise fees: summer, fall and spring semesters total $75000 it includes health insurance too, and housing is separate.
- Other expenses may total up to $20,000 for a year.
- The major component of academic fees included tuition: $8500 for each course; the rest of the miscellaneous elements were included but did not contribute to a large percentage of the total academic fees.

Overview
For the Prestige, and the good education of an Ivy League institution as well as higher chances of getting into a good medical school later on in life. They also gave me a fairly good financial aid package.
Fees
I'm not really sure what you mean by this. They charge for housing, room, tuition, health services, etc.
