IMS & Sum Hospital: Students' Opinion

AI-Generated Summary based on 18 Reviews

Admission to this college is based on the NEET examination, following MCC guidelines, with a systematic online counseling process comprising three initial and two additional mop-up rounds. Candidates are allotted seats based on their ranks, like the candidate who secured a seat with a rank of 218 in the 4th round for 150 available seats. The first-year fees and documentation are required at admission. The college, highly regarded in India and Odisha, boasts a student-friendly faculty from prestigious institutions like AIIMS and BHU, maintaining a 1:10 faculty-to-student ratio.

The 4.5-year course includes a 1-year internship, with mandatory attendance and exams. A few students face debarment or need supplementary exams due to low marks or attendance. The total course fee is about 1 crore INR for 5.5 years, with per semester tuition fees of 9 lakhs and an annual fee of 14.9 lakhs. Hostel fees are around 30,000 INR per year. Fees are collected transparently via drafts, cheques, or NEFT.

Students undergo a mandatory internship with stipends ranging from 17,000 to 30,000 INR per month. Post-internship, graduates enjoy high demand in government and private hospitals, with starting salaries around 55,000 INR per month. Scholarship opportunities are limited, with a 15,000 INR annual scholarship based on board exam marks and additional ones for SC/ST students and university exam performers. Overall, while the college produces competent doctors with strong clinical skills, the rising fees may pose a barrier to many potential students.

IMS & SUM Hospital MBBS Scholarships 2027

IMS & SUM Hospital, being a deemed private medical institution, has limited scholarship offerings. The college offers merit-based scholarships to students based on their academic performance in 10th and 12th standard examinations. Additionally, government scholarships for SC/ST/OBC students are available through state and central government schemes. Students are encouraged to explore education loan options from nationalised banks, as the institution does not provide in-house EMI or loan facilities.

The merit-based scholarships offered by the institution are modest in value relative to the overall course fee, but they serve as recognition of academic excellence. Ans. IMS & SUM Hospital is one of the best private medical colleges in eastern India and ranks consistently in the top 20 nationally by NIRF. The hospital has over 1,400 beds and an OPD patient load of approximately 3,000 patients per day, which provides excellent clinical exposure to MBBS students. The neurosurgery and other super-specialty departments are particularly strong, having performed several world-first surgeries. For students who cannot secure a seat in government colleges or top deemed colleges of Karnataka/Maharashtra, IMS & SUM is a strong option, especially for those planning to pursue PG in Odisha.

Ques. What is the total cost of doing MBBS at IMS & SUM Hospital including hostel and mess?

Ans. The tuition fee for 2026-27 is Rs. 21.95 lakhs per annum. Over 4.5 years, the total tuition fee comes to approximately Rs. 98.78 lakhs. If you opt for hostel (2-bedded Non-AC at Rs. 70,000/year) and mess (Rs. 54,000/year), the additional cost over 4.5 years is approximately Rs. 5.58 lakhs, bringing the total to around Rs. 1.04 crore. For a 2-bedded AC room, the hostel cost is Rs. 1.25 lakhs/year, making the total approximately Rs. 1.08 crore. Note that fees have been increasing by approximately Rs. 1-2 lakhs per year historically.

Ques. Is admission to IMS & SUM Hospital MBBS only through NEET? Is there any management quota?

Ans. Yes, admission to MBBS at IMS & SUM Hospital is entirely through NEET-UG, followed by MCC/DGHS counselling for deemed university seats. There is no separate management quota admission process outside of MCC counselling. NRI quota seats (38 seats) are also filled through MCC counselling at USD 50,000 per annum. The college does not conduct any independent entrance examination.

Ques. How is the hostel and campus life at IMS & SUM Hospital?

Ans. The college has two campuses (Campus 2 and Campus 3) located approximately 400 metres apart. Campus 3 houses the medical college building, hospital, central library, and auditorium. Campus 2 has sports facilities including basketball, tennis, badminton, and volleyball courts. Hostel rooms are available in 2-bedded Non-AC, 3-bedded AC, and 2-bedded AC categories. The hostels provide 24x7 WiFi, and the campus has its own water treatment and waste management plants. However, student reviews suggest that hostel facilities are basic relative to the fees charged, and mess food quality is average.

Ans. MBBS interns at IMS & SUM Hospital receive a monthly stipend during the one-year compulsory rotating internship at SUM Hospital. The stipend amount has been reported to be approximately Rs. 25,000-30,000 per month for recent batches, though this may vary. Ques. Does IMS & SUM Hospital have any reservation or fee concession for SC/ST/OBC students?

Ans. IMS & SUM Hospital is a deemed private university and does not follow government reservation norms for seat allocation. All 212 general seats are filled through MCC counselling based on NEET rank without category-based reservation. However, SC/ST/OBC students may be eligible for government scholarships (state and central) to offset a portion of the fees. The fee structure is uniform for all students irrespective of category, with the exception of NRI quota seats which carry a higher fee in USD.
