Ques. Is it possible for Mechanical or Civil Engineering graduates to build a career in the IT sector?
Ans. Yes, absolutely. It is a well-established career path in India for graduates from core branches—such as Mechanical, Civil, and Electrical—to transition into the IT and software industry. In the modern tech landscape, recruiters increasingly prioritise logical reasoning, problem-solving skills, and coding proficiency over the specific branch mentioned on a degree.
Key Requirements
- Programming Fundamentals: Mastering at least one core language (Python, Java, C++, or JavaScript).
- Data Structures & Algorithms (DSA): This is the "gold standard" for technical interviews across both service and product-based companies.
- Practical Projects: Building a portfolio on GitHub that demonstrates the ability to create web apps, mobile apps, or data models.
- Internships: Gaining real-world experience through virtual internships or off-campus tech roles.
Strategic Advantages & Challenges
- The Advantage: Core engineers often have strong mathematical backgrounds and analytical thinking, which are highly valued in fields like Data Science, Robotics, and FinTech.
- The Challenge: Some highly specialised roles (e.g., Compiler Design, Operating Systems, or VLSI) may still favour candidates with a formal CSE/ECE background.
The Hiring Landscape: Service vs. Product Companies
The IT sector generally offers two entry points for core engineering students:
| Category | Typical Recruiters | Hiring Policy |
|---|---|---|
| Service-Based | TCS, Infosys, Wipro, Cognizant | Large-scale "all-branch" recruitment; provide 3–6 months of internal IT training. |
| Product-Based | Amazon, Google, Startups, Zomato | "Skill-first" approach; if the candidate can clear the coding rounds, their branch is often irrelevant. |
Ques. Do emerging engineering branches like AI, ML, and Cyber Security offer real career value?
Ans. Yes, the value is immense. By 2026, the demand for specialised engineers in India is projected to hit 1 million for AI alone. While traditional Computer Science (CSE) provides a broad foundation, emerging branches offer a "fast track" to high-growth sectors.
Market Demand & Growth Projections (2026)
The shift toward automation and digital safety has made these branches the "Big Three" of the modern economy:
- AI & ML: Every major industry—from Healthcare to Fintech—is integrating AI. India’s AI market is growing at a CAGR of 45%, creating a massive talent gap.
- Cyber Security: With cyber-attacks rising globally, organisations now view security as a "business-critical" function. This has led to a 35% year-on-year growth in security roles.
- The "Skill Premium": Professionals with AI/ML expertise currently earn 50%–60% more than their peers with generic software skills.
Salary & Placement Comparison
Placement data from 2025–26 shows that specialised branches often secure higher starting packages due to the scarcity of skilled talent.
| Branch | Average Entry-Level Salary | Top Roles |
|---|---|---|
| Traditional CSE | INR 6 LPA – INR 12 LPA | Software Developer, Full-Stack Dev |
| B.Tech AI & ML | INR 8 LPA – INR 18 LPA | ML Engineer, AI Researcher, Data Scientist |
| Cyber Security | INR 7 LPA – INR 15 LPA | Ethical Hacker, Security Architect, SOC Analyst |
BTech Fee Structure 2026
Engineering college fees differ greatly depending on the type of college.
- Tier 1 (IITs, NITs, Top Privates): Govt Tier 1 colleges will cost approximately INR 8-12 Lakhs for 4 years. Best privates (like BITS) may exceed INR 25 Lakhs.
- Tier 2 (Mid-level Private/Govt): Generally costs between INR 8-16 Lakhs.
- Tier 3 (State/Local Private): Generally costs between INR 3-7 Lakhs.
Financial Aid & ROI: Most colleges provide massive fee waivers for SC/ST/PwD candidates and those from low-income backgrounds (income < 5 LPA). When paying high fees for private Tier 2 colleges, always compute the Return on Investment (ROI). It is a good investment if the average placement is 20 LPA, but not so great if the average placement is 4 LPA.

Distance BTech 2026Ques. Is it possible to get direct BTech admission without JEE Main?
Ans. Yes, it is entirely possible to get direct B.Tech admission without appearing for or qualifying in JEE Main. While JEE Main is the primary gateway for NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs, several other pathways exist for engineering aspirants in 2026.
University-Specific Entrance Exams
Many of India’s top-ranked private universities conduct their own entrance tests. These are often considered at par with or just below JEE Main in terms of prestige and placement opportunities.
| University | Entrance Exam | Key Focus |
|---|---|---|
| BITS Pilani | BITSAT | Rivalling top IITs; strictly merit-based. |
| VIT Vellore | VITEEE | One of the largest private placement hubs. |
| Manipal Institute (MIT) | MET | Known for industry-aligned curriculum. |
| SRM University | SRMJEEE | Offers multiple campuses and flexible specialisations. |
| Amrita University | AEEE | Strong research focus and high NIRF rankings. |
State-Level Entrance Exams (CETs)
If candidates are looking for Government Engineering Colleges or reputed private state colleges without JEE Main, state CETs are the best options. These exams usually have a high seat reservation for "Home State" candidates.
- MHT CET: For colleges in Maharashtra (e.g., COEP, VJTI).
- WBJEE: For West Bengal (e.g., Jadavpur University).
- KCET / COMEDK: For top Bangalore colleges (e.g., RVCE, BMSCE).
- GUJCET: For Gujarat-based institutes.
- KEAM: For engineering colleges in Kerala.
Direct Merit-Based Admission (12th Marks)
Several private universities offer direct admission based on your Class 12 Board Exam percentages (specifically in Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics).
- Eligibility: Typically requires 60% to 75% aggregate in PCM.
- Popular Institutes: Amity University, Sharda University, Galgotias University, and LPU often have merit-based windows for high scorers in Boards.
Management Quota Seats
Most private engineering colleges reserve 10% to 25% of their seats under the "Management Quota."
- Process: You can apply directly to the college admission office.
- Requirement: You must still meet the minimum eligibility (usually 45–50% in Class 12).
- Note: Tuition fees for management seats are significantly higher than merit seats, and "donation" fees may apply depending on the branch demand (like CSE).
Emerging "Non-JEE" Pathways (IIT Online/Hybrid)
Interestingly, in 2026, even some IITs have launched degree programs that do not require JEE Main:
- IIT Madras: BS in Data Science and Applications (Qualifier-based).
- IIT Jodhpur: BS in Applied AI and Data Science.
- IIT Guwahati: Online BSc/Hons in Data Science and AI.
- These programs typically involve a "Qualifier Process" where you study for a month and pass an exam to gain entry.

Whether or not BTech CSE is difficult for a student depends on multiple factors like individual aptitude, study habits, and dedication. While CSE is a challenging field that requires a solid foundation in mathematics, logical reasoning, and problem-solving skills, it's not necessarily difficult for an average student. Many students find success in CSE by maintaining consistent effort, seeking help when needed, and actively engaging with the material. Additionally, universities often provide support services such as tutoring, study groups, and academic advisors to assist students in overcoming challenges.
It's important for students considering a BTech in CSE to be prepared for rigorous coursework and to have a genuine interest in technology and programming.
IP University considers the JEE Mains Rank of candidates for admission to its 4-year BTech courses. But for the candidates who take lateral admission after completing their diploma, their IPU CET Rank is considered. In both cases, 85% of seats are reserved for Delhi Home State students, and only 15% are reserved for outside students.

Bachelor of Engineering (BE) is more theory and knowledge-oriented. BITS Pilani is a well-known institution that offers a BE in various disciplines. Bachelor of Technology (BTech) is more practical and technology-oriented. The IITs and NITs offer a BTech in various disciplines. Internships and industrial visits may be essential in a BE degree, but these are absolutely mandatory in a BTech degree. The BTech curriculum is rapidly updated as per the latest technological developments, but the BE curriculum may or may not be updated as regularly. Technical colleges offer a BTech degree, while universities with several courses like BA, BCom, etc. as well, offer a BE. In a practical and real-life sense, both degrees are more or less the same in the Indian context. The approach may differ in some cases, but the course content and further opportunities are the same for both. Make sure to look at the situation in the context of other countries if you are planning to pursue jobs/higher studies abroad.
