The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) is one of the most prestigious institutions in India, standing as a pioneer in spreading education all over the country. IIT offers a variety of courses in BE, B.Tech, M.Tech, and dual degrees in a number of specializations. There are 23 IITs in India, established as autonomous, technical institutions for science and technology courses. The typical fee amount for the first year in BTech courses ranges from INR 39,000 in IIT Kharagpur to INR 3,22,800 in IIT Dhanbad (ISM).
The fee structure is released every year by JoSAA—Joint Seat Allocation Authority for all of the courses as soon as the counselling process is started.

Ques. Are IIT fees refundable?
Ans. Yes, IIT fees are refundable, but the specific refund policy varies depending on the IIT and the timing of withdrawal. Generally, if a student withdraws before the start of classes, a full refund is given, minus a processing fee (around Rs. 3,000-5,000). After classes begin, refunds are usually limited to caution deposits and may not include tuition fees.
Ques. How much are IIT fees per year?
Ans. In contrast, the average fees per semester at an IIT range from ?1.3 to ?1.5 L, adding up to a hefty ?2.6 to ?3 L per year. A friend of mine studying at an NIT mentioned that his annual fees are about ?1.5 L.
Ques. Which IIT has 100% placement?
Ans. While no IIT guarantees 100% placement for all students across all branches, IIT Delhi and some specific branches in other IITs are known for consistently achieving high placement rates, sometimes nearing 100%. Top IITs like IIT Bombay, IIT Madras, and IIT Kharagpur also have strong placement records, with some branches like Computer Science often achieving near-perfect placement rates.
Ques. Which IIT is easy to get?
Ans. Generally, it's not accurate to say any IIT is "easy" to get into, as all IITs require a very high rank in the JEE Advanced exam. However, some IITs may have slightly higher closing ranks for certain programs or branches, making them comparatively less competitive than others. These might include IITs like IIT Guwahati or IIT (ISM) Dhanbad, but it's still crucial to aim for the best possible score.
