A German student visa (national visa, Type D) is the entry permit that allows Indian students to live and study in Germany for the full duration of their degree. Germany welcomed over 402,000 international students in the 2024-25 academic year, a record high, with India as the single largest source country at 59,419 students (DAAD India, 2025). The approval rate for Indian student visa applicants is approximately 90 to 95% for complete applications. The most common reason for rejection is not weak academics. It is incomplete documentation and insufficient financial proof. Three things Indian students must confirm before applying:

  • The APS certificate (INR 18,000, issued by the German Embassy in New Delhi) is mandatory for all Indian students and must be obtained before the visa application
  • blocked account of EUR 11,904 (approximately INR 12.77 Lakhs) is required as proof of financial resources

Conversion rate used: 1 EUR = INR 107.2

Types of German Student Visa

Germany issues different types of national visas (Type D) depending on the purpose of your study. All are long-stay visas valid for more than 90 days. The table below shows all visa types with their purpose and typical duration.

Visa Type Purpose Typical Duration

Mandatory Preliminary Internship Visa Compulsory internship required before formal enrollment in certain degree programs As per internship duration
Visa to Seek a University Place For students who have not yet received an admission offer and want to apply to universities from within Germany Up to 9 months
  1. Full-Time Academic Studies Visa:

This is the standard visa for Indian students pursuing a Bachelor's, Master's or doctoral degree at a recognized German university. It covers the full duration of your studies. Students on this visa can work up to 140 full days or 280 half days per year (approximately 20 hours per week during term time) under Germany's Skilled Immigration Act 2026. No separate work permit is required.

  1. German Language Course Visa:

Issued for students attending an intensive German language course in Germany. This visa is for language learning only. It does not permit university enrollment. If you plan to study at a university after the language course, you must apply for a separate Full-Time Academic Studies Visa. Note: APS certificate is not required for a language course visa.

  1. Studienkolleg Visa:

If your Class 12 certificate is not recognized as equivalent to the German Abitur, you must attend a Studienkolleg (state preparatory college) before enrolling in a degree program. The Studienkolleg typically lasts 1 to 2 semesters. After passing the Feststellungsprufung (assessment exam), you can apply to a German university.

  1. Propaedeutic Course Visa

Issued for students enrolling in preparatory courses that combine subject-specific academic knowledge and language training. These courses are offered by some universities as a bridge before formal degree enrollment. Duration varies by institution and program.

  1. Mandatory Preliminary Internship Visa

Some degree programs in Germany require a compulsory internship before formal enrollment. This visa allows you to enter Germany and complete the required internship. After completing it, you apply for the Full-Time Academic Studies Visa to begin your degree.

  1. Visa to Seek a University Place

This visa allows students who have not yet received an admission offer to travel to Germany and apply to universities in person. It is valid for up to 9 months. You cannot begin a degree program on this visa. Once you receive an admission offer, you must apply for the Full-Time Academic Studies Visa. The most common visa for Indian students is the Full-Time Academic Studies Visa. This is what you apply for once you have a confirmed admission offer from a German university.

Proof of Financial Resources

Any visa application requires proof of financial resources that can ensure you have enough money to live, study, and stay in Germany. Besides the above-mentioned documents, an applicant is required to submit any one of the following:

  1. Blocked Bank Account (Sperrkonto)

A blocked account is the most common way for international students to prove financial means. Applicants must deposit a minimum of EUR 11,904 (approximately INR 12.77 Lakhs at April 2026 rates) into a German blocked account before the visa is approved. This amount is released monthly at EUR 992 after arrival in Germany. Providers include Fintiba, Expatrio and Deutsche Bank. Opening a blocked account takes 1 to 2 weeks.

  1. Proof of Parental Income

If the applicant’s parents have a stable income or sufficient financial assets, their income documents can be submitted as proof of financial support. This usually includes salary slips, tax returns, bank statements, and a formal declaration stating they will support you during your studies.

  1. Scholarships

A scholarship awarded by a recognized organization or institution can be used as financial proof. The official award letter should clearly state the amount, duration, and types of expenses covered (tuition, living, insurance, etc.).

  1. Bank Guarantee

Some students take out an education loan from a recognized bank to show financial capacity. You must submit official documents from the bank confirming the loan amount, disbursement schedule, interest rate, and repayment terms.

  1. Declaration of Commitment (Verpflichtungserklärung)

A resident of Germany (usually a family member or close contact) can act as the applicant’s financial support. They must apply for and obtain a formal Declaration of Commitment from their local immigration office (Ausländerbehörde), confirming they will cover their living and study expenses during their stay.
