According to the NBMES, the cutoff reduction in NEET PG 2025 makes 95,913 more candidates eligible for admission to medical courses.

The National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences (NBEMS) has notified the Supreme Court of India that after the reduction in the qualifying percentile for NEET PG 2025, around 95,913 additional candidates are eligible to participate in the NEET PG 2025 counselling process.
As per the counter-affidavit filed in the Supreme Court, NBEMS has clarified that it had no involvement in deciding the reduction of the cut-off percentile. Rather, the decision falls under the authority of the Directorate General of Health Services, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, and the National Medical Commission.

The board implemented the revised cut-off after receiving official communication from the Ministry on January 9, 2026, and subsequently published revised results on January 13, 2026.

The National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences, an examination authority, also stated that in the interest of newly eligible candidates, any ruling on the matter would directly affect thousands of candidates, and therefore, their interests must be considered before taking any decision.
The NEET PG 2025 case is being heard by Justices P.S. Narasimha and Alok Aradhe, as this issue has come up because some petitioners have challenged the decision to lower the qualifying percentile in the Supreme Court. Furthermore, the Higher Court has earlier asked the Union government and NBEMS to explain why the cut-off was reduced.
In addition, NBEMS referred to a recent judgment of the Delhi High Court that dismissed a challenge to the lowered cut-off.
