The Chairman of UGC, Mamidala Jagadesh Kumar, recently published an insightful article on the benefits of open and distance learning (ODL) programs in India. He talked about the possibilities of integrating AI and ODL for more accessible and flexible

New Delhi: The Chairman of the University Grants Commission (UGC), Mamidala Jagadesh Kumar, recently released an article titled “The Emergence of Open and Distance Learning (ODL) and Online Programmes in India” on April 04, 2024. In the article, he said that online and distance learning (ODL) will keep growing and India may eventually see a Gross Enrolment Ratio (GER) of 50% for ODL courses by 2035.
“With clear eligibility criteria defined in UGC regulations and an efficient online application process, there is a surge of institutions willing to offer distance mode and online programs. These institutions have also embraced digital technology to make education more accessible and flexible,” said Kumar in his article.
Kumar extolled the virtues of ODL programs, saying that their low-cost and easily accessible nature made higher education more feasible for many students unable to join regular courses. Whether it be due to socioeconomic status, time flexibility, or disability, ODL courses are easier for many students across India.
The ODL courses also help to bring in female students, according to Kumar’s article. “ODL provides accessible and affordable educational avenues to women, fostering gender equality and empowerment and creating more inclusive lifelong learning opportunities for career advancement,” said the article.
The Role of AI in ODL
According to Kumar, integrating AI systems into learning, especially for ODL programs, can usher in a new era of education accessibility. “With the integration of AI and ICT technologies, the ODL and online programs are likely to revolutionize and redefine the future of education, creating new avenues for personalized and engaging learning experiences,” he wrote.
He also suggested ways for Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) to incorporate AI in their work.
“Given the emergence of new technologies, HEIs should adapt AI algorithms to analyze learners’ progress and preferences and offer personalized learning paths,” he wrote. “HEIs should work on providing interactive learning experiences, including virtual simulations, AI-powered tutors, and collaborative online tools,” he added.
