Doctors’ Association Calls for Bond-Free Medical Education and Streamlined NEET PG Process

New Delhi: The Union Minister for Health and Family Welfare has met with representatives from the Association of Doctors and the Federation of Resident Doctors' Association (FORDA) to address immediate reforms in the medical community. The meeting also highlighted the plea for medical education without compulsory bonds and the need for streamlining NEET PG

What was the aim of the meeting between the Government and FORDA?

The meeting aimed to emphasize the significance of relieving stress and promoting a healthier work environment for medical professionals. Mental health took center stage, with a focus on addressing issues like prolonged duty hours impacting residents' well-being. 

The aim behind the meeting was also to:

  • Acknowledging the significance of the raised concerns, the Health Minister pledged swift attention and resolution to the pressing issues discussed in the meeting. The discussion focused on crucial aspects highlighted by the newly appointed FORDA team (2022-23), including the creation of an Indian Medical Services cadre to manage bureaucratic decisions and handle administrative affairs in the medical sector.
  • Promoting bond-free medical education and a consistent policy across states. Proposing the Healthcare Worker Protection Act to address assaults during medical jobs.
  • Advocating for Risk Hazard allowances for resident doctors affected by occupational hazards and ensuring mandatory health service cards. Striving to minimize contractual positions for doctors by promoting regular positions.

Additionally, the association has requested an extension of the tenure for existing Ad-hoc posts to a minimum of six months. They are also proposing amendments to the Residency Scheme of 1992 to align it with current requirements.

Streamlining the NEET PG Entrance Exams 

They also insist that the salaries of resident doctors should either meet or surpass state guidelines. Urging the streamlining of NEET PG entrance exams and enforcing consistent counseling procedures.

They additionally support the establishment of an apex body to oversee medical education, intending to streamline decision-making processes and minimize delays between governing entities.

Furthermore, the associations sincerely urged the Health Ministry for prompt attention and proactive measures to implement these reforms, making a significant impact on the medical sector. The meeting highlighted the urgent requirement for reforms to establish a more conducive and supportive environment for medical professionals across the nation.
