DU Students Failing the Practical Exam Required to Take Classes

New Delhi: One of the DU officials has revealed that Delhi University students would now have to enrol in classes for one semester if they fail to pass in the practical exam.

DU has made it mandatory considering the continual assessment and tutorials that have been made essential due to the altered evaluation pattern under the new undergraduate structure.

As per the previous regulation of DU, if any student fails to clear the practical exam then he/she will be registered as “Ex-Student” for reapplying purposes.

As a result, the current rule was expanded to include the following clause: "Students who have failed in any practical examinations administered by the university through the Continuous Evaluation System shall be eligible to seek re-admission only for retaking the said practical examination through the Continuing Evaluation System".

The resolution in this regard was approved in December 2020 and went into effect from the academic year 2022–2023. A Senior DU official claimed that after the university implemented the new assessment plan, they recognised the need for the adjustment.

Considering an M.Sc. student who was sick and unable to attend the class for a particular subject but still took the exam. His score in the practical segment would be an ER (Essential repetition), the official remarked. However, the practical exams cannot be passed without attending the classes.

The continuous evaluation is required for the practical exam. Therefore, a student must enrol in ongoing classes which is now possible after the modifications, the official continued.

In order to highlight ongoing assessment and tutorials, the university has changed the assessment pattern for the new undergraduate structure in February.

The internal assessment ratio has changed to 30:70 under the new assessment pattern, while the theoretical examination ratio has changed to 45:55. The minimum attendance requirement for the continuous mode of assessment is 66%, and if a student fails the continuous form of assessment, he or she must apply for readmission to the course in order to pass the assignment or course.

The actions taken will be evaluated for 30 and 10 marks, respectively, through internal and continuous assessments, all the activities conducted under this method will be assessed as: 30 marks for continuous assessment and 10 marks for internal assessment.
