GUJCET Likely to be Replaced with JEE Main for Engineering and Pharmacy Admissions

New Delhi: The Gujarat Secondary and Higher Secondary Education Board is planning to replace the Gujarat Common Entrance Test (GUJCET) with JEE Main for admissions into engineering and pharmacy colleges. These changes are expected to come into effect starting from the academic year 2025.

The state government is considering eliminating the GUJCET exam. According to the latest report, the board will likely maintain the current system of merit list preparation, which will now incorporate marks from the Class 12 board exam and JEE Main, with a ratio of 60:40 respectively.

Proposal to Replace GUJCET with JEE Main: Changes in Admission Criteria

Earlier, the Gujarat Board formulated the merit list for admission to BE/BTech/BPharma courses in Gujarat using marks from the Class 12 board and GUJCET exams, distributed in a 60% to 40% ratio.

Considering the burden on students, the proposal to replace GUJCET with JEE as the sole entrance test for engineering and pharmacy courses is under consideration.

According to government sources, almost 90% of students who appear for their Class 12 exams also sit for both JEE exams annually. GUJCET is taken by approximately 70,000 students each year, and its scores are widely accepted by government colleges at the state level.

This isn't the first time the state government is considering the elimination of the GUJCET exam. Initially introduced in 2004-05, it was replaced with JEE Main in 2013. However, due to student feedback, the state government reintroduced GUJCET in 2017.
