IIM Calcutta inaugurates 17th batch of PGPEX VLM

New Delhi: The 17th batch of the PGPEX-VLM was officially inaugurated at the Indian Institute of Management Calcutta with the presence of Mr. Nakagawa Koichi, the Consul-General of Japan in Kolkata, as the chief guest on April 18, 2023.

IIM Calcutta, IIT Kanpur, and IIT Madras jointly run the Post Graduate Programme for Executives for Visionary Leadership in Manufacturing (PGPEX-VLM). PGPEX-VLM is a one-year full-time residential programme whose goal is to develop future Visionary Leaders for the manufacturing sectors in India in order to increase the manufacturing industry's competitiveness on the global stage.

The ceremony started with the lighting of the IIMC's traditional lamp by the chief guest Mr. Nakagawa Koichi, Consul-General of Japan in Kolkata, Mr. Babu Khan- CEO, CII Naoroji Godrej Centre for Manufacturing Excellence, Professor Uttam Kumar Sarkar, Director of IIM Calcutta, Professor Manish Thakur, Dean (NI & ER), Mr. G Sunderraman, Executive Vice President-Corporate Development - Godrej and other dignitaries of the PGPEX-VLM programme.

In collaboration with the National Manufacturing Competitiveness Council (NMCC), the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), and the Confederation of Indian Industry, Professor Uttam Kumar Sarkar emphasised the long-lasting synergy of three institutes of national importance.

Prof. Deepu Philip, the coordinator for IIT Kanpur, emphasised the importance of visionary leaders in the manufacturing industry as well as the demand for ongoing transformation through innovation. IIT Madras professor LataDyaram urged the students to constantly push themselves in order to develop into visionary leaders.

The event also had dignitaries from CII. G Sunderraman, Chairman, Executive Vice President- Corporate Development of Godrej & Boyce Mfg Co Ltd and Chairman of CII VLFM Senior Advisory Committee shows gratitude to the Padma Shri Prof. Shoji Shiba, one of the founders of the VLM programme, and the inherent need for visionary leaders in the manufacturing sector and the ideology of this programme to encourage young leaders towards the manufacturing industry with a vision to compete globally.

The importance of sustainability and green manufacturing was then discussed by Mr Babu Khan, CEO of the CII Naoroji Godrej Centre for Manufacturing Excellence.

The event's chief guest, Mr. Nakagawa Koichi, Consul-General of Japan in Kolkata, emphasised the importance of the Indian manufacturing sector to the GDP of the country, the long history of industrial cooperation between Japan and India, and the necessity of this programme in developing future leaders for the Indian manufacturing sector.

The different keynote delivered by the eminent dignitaries provided the 17th batch of PGPEX-VLM students with greater insights about the programme and the current industrial landscape.

In order to accomplish the event, Prof. Sudhakar Reddy, Chair of PGPEX-VLM, IIM Calcutta, offered a vote of thanks. The program's uniqueness is highlighted by its capacity to satisfy the rising demand for techno-managerial leaders who will have an impact on the neo-industrial revolution.

Since 2007, the programme has produced a variety of forward-thinking leaders who uphold the core principles of the VLM community.
