IIM Calcutta and Max Weber Forum for South Asian Studies and School of Education, University of Glasgow organised a conference under ESRC (UK) funded ‘Gendered Journeys’ Project.

New Delhi: IIM Calcutta has organised a conference on ‘Reimagining the Contemporary in Indian Education’ on the campus ground in collaboration with Max Weber Forum for South Asian Studies and the School of Education, University of Glasgow.
As per IIM Calcutta, the conference was organised by Saikat Maitra and Manish Kumar Thakur from Public Policy and Management Group of the institute as a part of ESRC (UK) funded ‘Gendered Journeys’ project. The event was held for three days, from April 21 to April 23, 2023.
The key objective of the conference is to comprehend the realities in Indian education in correlation with the New Education Policy (NEP) 2020 and identify the inequalities in the education system. The first session of the conference began on April 21, 2023.
On the first day, prominent speakers and industry experts such as Gopal Guru, Former Faculty of Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) and Editor of Economic and Political Weekly, and Srabani Maitra from the University of Glasgow were present at the occasion.
The second day began with a presentation by Prof. Shilpi Shikha Phukan, who analysed the Vidya Bharti schools in Assam through an ethnographic study, followed by a presentation by Gargi Gayan from KKHSOU on the role of community in line with National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.
Other members who joined the event are Debarati Bagchi from the Max Weber Foundation (as the discussant), Ankita Mookerjee from South Calcutta Girls’ College, Sayantan Dasgupta from Jadavpur University, Anirban Das from CSSSC and Manoj Kumar from Azim Premji University among others.
On the last day of the academic conference, Shibasish Chatterjee of Jadavpur University joined as the discussant and Prof. Manabi Majumdar, Former Faculty of CSSSC. Majumdar talked about attempts to erode the plurality of perspectives, rewrite Indian history and blur the boundaries between the market and state in education.
The session featured Debaditya Bhattacharya as the discussant and covered two papers by Shivali Tukdeo of Indira Mahindra School of Education and Rajesh Bhattacharya of IIM Calcutta. The event ended with a vote of thanks on behalf of the organisers Saikat Maitra.
