New Delhi: Indian Institute of Management (IIM) ,Lucknow in partnership with the State Institute of Health and Family Welfare and Johns Hopkins University (US) have initiated a training programme to impart management and leadership principles to the doctors. As a part of the collaboration, IIM Lucknow has begun a training programme for mid-level medical officers in which they will participate in didactic and hands-on lessons on systems thinking, problem-solving, managing quality, managing conflict, management duties, and effective communication.
Speaking about the collaboration, Partha Sarthi Sen Sharma, principal secretary for medical, health, and family welfare, said that It has long been believed that doctors, many of whom even having clinical skills, are not adequately prepared with leadership skills when they reach high administrative and managerial roles and there was a need for a model to train the doctors. Hence, the welfare is conducting this pilot with 26 doctors as per a broad agreement that they've with Bill and Melinda Gates.
There will be two phases to the program's execution. The selected mid-level doctors, such as CMO, CMS, and others will receive a one-week in-person refresher training as part of the first phase. In order to convey leadership and management skills, there will be face-to-face interaction and reflective learning. The second phase will consist of a three-month project-based field training programme with the goal of identifying champions who can lead, advocate, and inspire change in the health system of UP.
All the doctors will receive training in two to three batches till September. Commenting on the same, Prof. Archana Shukla, director of IIM-L, stated that the welfare will offer close mentoring to doctors from various districts of Uttar Pradesh for a period of three months to support the development of competency and leadership capacities. They will be trained for strategic problem-solving techniques and learn to think like leaders.
Stating that Leadership at all levels is crucial for any well-functioning health care system, Assistant Scientist Brian Wahl of JHU, said that they're honored to join hands with the UP government and IIML to assist the development of leadership and management skills among the state's medical officers. Further, the training will be imparted to the Doctors based on criteria including case studies, discussion-based learning, experiential learning, and peer learning sessions.
