IIT Bombay Launches New Koita Centre

New Delhi: The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay has officially launched its new Centre for Digital Health. The Koita Centre for Digital Health is dedicated to advancing academic initiatives, medical research, and industrial partnerships in the field of digital health.

In June 2021, the IIT Bombay declared the opening of the Koita Centre for Digital Health (KCDH). The centre was unveiled by the institute on April 17, 2023, during the official ceremony.

The Koita Foundation, founded by IIT Bombay graduates Rizwan Koita (BTech, Electrical Engineering, 1992) and Distinguished Service Award Winner, Rekha Koita (BTech, Metallurgical Engineering & Material Science, 1992), has provided funding for KCDH, the first of its type in India.

During the inaugural event, a symposium that brought experts and researchers together in technology and healthcare from hospitals, the government, academic, and business also took place.

The panellists discussed the panel's main themes, which included managing large healthcare data sets, using cutting-edge technologies like AI and ML in personalised medicine, modelling diseases for public health, the significance of local innovation in digital health, and the necessity of building national capacity in digital health.

Rekha Koita stated, "Our vision is for KCDH to become a globally renowned Centre in digital health informatics," when asked about her goals towards the organisation. It will stimulate entrepreneurship and research with some of the brightest minds, producing a group of experts who can really make a difference in terms of enhancing healthcare quality, accessibility, and affordability.

The Centre aspires to take the lead in digital health and informatics and it supports India's Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission (ABDM), which intends to "develop the backbone necessary to support the integrated digital health infrastructure of the country".

The Centre is conducting research in the fields of population health and public health policy, computational biology and bioinformatics, consumer health and telemedicine, data management, analysis, AI/ML, and healthcare applications. On the research projects, more details may be collected from kcdh.iitb.ac.in/research/.
