The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur has signed an agreement with the Military Engineer Services (MES) Jhansi to transform 5 Army stations into carbon-neutral campuses

New Delhi: The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur and the Military Engineer Services (MES) Jhansi have inked a contract to transform Army installations into carbon-neutral campuses. According to the IIT Kanpur and MES Jhansi agreement, a total of five campuses inside the cantonment of MES Jhansi will gradually become net zero carbon, net zero energy, net zero water, and net zero waste stations.
The process will start with the chosen Army sites receiving a proof-of-concept plan to use resources responsibly, as per the official statement. They will be judged according to their use of energy, energy consumption, carbon footprint, adoption of greener options, planting of trees on campus, and other factors.
The agreement also calls for educating Army soldiers about sustainable practices while they are on the job and building their resource pool. In the presence of Colonel Akhil Singh Charak, Commander Works Engineer (CWE) and IITK alumnus; Major Sunny Attri, Garrison Engineer from MES Jhansi, and Professor A R Harish, Dean of R and D, IIT Kanpur, Professor Ashish Garg, Professor Rajeev Jindal and Professor Aakash C Rai from the sustainable energy engineering department, the agreement was signed.
During the ceremony, Professor Abhay Karandikar, director of IIT Kanpur, said that the institute's partnership with Military Engineer Services (MES) Jhansi aims to transform Army stations into carbon-neutral campuses and bears testimony to synergistic efforts between two institutions in contributing towards India's net zero projections.

Professor Rajeev Jindal of the IITK department of sustainable energy engineering, said that to considerably advance India's goal of carbon neutrality, Army cantonments are being transformed based on the essential Net Zero requirements.
The department of Sustainable Energy Engineering will be in charge of all on-site operations at the Army campuses chosen in accordance with the Memorandum of Understanding, and the annual audits would be conducted.
Delighted to be connected with MES Jhansi, which proactively supported the effort, Prof Rajeev said that they want to build success stories for net neutrality in India with one step at a time.
