IIT Madras Achieves Doubling of International and National Patents Receives 2550 IP Applications

New Delhi: In 2023, the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT Madras) reported a significant increase in the number of inventions and devices developed within the institute, with 300 granted patents. This represents a remarkable 100% increase from the previous year, 2022 when 156 devices received patent status. The growth is significant as the number of patents granted by the Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT) rose from 58 in 2022 to 105 in 2023.

Providing a breakdown of patent filings, IIT Madras revealed that, as of December 2023, a total of 221 patents were filed in the current fiscal year. Among these, 163 were filed with Indian authorities, while 63 were submitted to international agencies.

IIT Madras has received about 2,550 intellectual property applications domestically (1,800) and internationally (750). Of these, 1,100 applications, comprising around 900 in India and 200 internationally, have been successfully registered or granted patents.

In this direction, I congratulate the faculty and students and the Office of Industrial Consultancy and Sponsored Research (ICSR) who have put together a very comprehensive program, by which we have created a record in the number of patents filed.”

The filing of patent applications at IIT Madras began in January 1975, with the first application being granted in May 1977. The institute achieved a milestone when the total number of intellectual property applications crossed 1,000 in 2016, 2,000 in 2022, and reached 2,500 in 2023.

IIT Madras has secured patents in diverse technological domains like wireless networks, advanced materials, robotics, additive manufacturing technology, engine advancements, assistive devices, etc. The management of intellectual property and technology transfer at IIT Madras is checked by the Office of Industrial Consultancy and Sponsored Research (ICSR).
