IIT Madras Inaugurates Research Lab to Develop Emerging AI Applications

New Delhi: A research centre was opened by the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Madras on April 27, 2023. Rajeev Chandrasekhar, Minister of State for Electronics and Information Technology, Skill Development and Entrepreneurship, officially opened the Veena and Pratap Subrahmanyam Centre for Digital Intelligence, Security Hardware and Architecture (V&PS - CDISHA).

The centre will utilise SHAKTI, a homegrown microprocessor created by IIT Madras to carry out a range of cutting-edge research initiatives including the development of a new class of computers that can support the latency and power requirements of AI applications. During Shri Rajeev Chandrasekhar's speech at the inauguration event, the three key trends that are influencing India's future were covered. The first one has to do with how quickly technology is digitalizing the world, the second is how important it is for nations to build a network of reliable technology partners and the third is how much digital expertise is needed.

The Director of IIT Madras, Prof. V. Kamakoti, expressed the importance of the Research Facility and noted that it had come just in time for India to start its Semiconductor Mission and to start the process of building up fabrication facilities. "Experimentation is really the best method to learn about computer architecture, organisation, and operating systems. In order to do this, we wanted to build a platform. This centre has assisted in attaining this objective”, said Prof. Kamakoti.

Construction of this institution is an essential step in developing a strong collaboration between academia, business, and the government. The 'MacDermid Alpha Centre of Excellence in Electronics Assembly and Skills Development' was also established on this day. The Central Electronics Centre at IIT Madras now has an automated PCB assembly facility thanks to Cookson India's (MacDermid Alpha) CSR programme. One thousand engineers and diploma holders will receive mentoring each year from the MacDermid Alpha Centre. Additionally, this programme offers apprenticeship opportunities.
