Who is Considered a Foreign National?

Candidates who are not citizens of India, whether by birth or through naturalization, are considered foreign nationals. Foreign nationals do not have access to the reservation categories available for Indian students, such as those for economically weaker sections or various caste groups, and there are no special seats for female foreign nationals.

  • For these candidates, there's a special arrangement allowing them to apply for up to 10% of the total seats available in each course.
  • If you are a foreign national looking to register for JEE Advanced 2025, you do not need to take the JEE (Main) 2025 exam. You can directly register for JEE Advanced, provided you meet the other eligibility requirements.
  • Candidates with Overseas Citizenship of India (OCI) or Persons of Indian Origin (PIO) cards issued before March 4, 2021, have two options for their application: they can either apply as foreign nationals or as Indian nationals on the same terms as Indian students.

Who is Considered OCI/PIO Candidates?

Accordingly, OCI/PIO candidates are divided into three categories as follows:

  • Those OCI/PIO candidates who have obtained their OCI/PIO cards subsequent to 04.03.2021 will be considered as foreign national candidates and will be governed by the eligibility conditions contained in the Information Brochure for the foreign national candidates. These candidates are referred to as OCI/PIO (F). The OCI/PIO (F) candidates will be eligible to compete only for the foreign supernumerary seats
  • Those OCI/PIO candidates who have obtained their OCI/PIO cards before 04.03.2021 and choose to be considered as foreign nationals will be governed by the eligibility conditions contained in the Information Brochure for the foreign national candidates and are also referred to as OCI/PIO (F). The OCI/PIO (F) candidates will be eligible to compete only for the foreign supernumerary seats.
  • Those OCI/PIO candidates who have obtained their OCI/PIO cards before 04.03.2021 and choose to be treated at par with Indian nationals, will be governed by the eligibility conditions contained Information Brochure for the Indian national candidates and are referred to as OCI/PIO (I) (see Clause 11).
