New Delhi: The Faculty of Dentistry at Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI), in collaboration with the Asian Coalition for Health Empowerment (ACHE) in Delhi, has organized a Continuing Medical Education (CME) initiative titled "Achieving Sustainable Development Goals: International Strategies for De-addiction of Drugs, Tobacco, Alcohol, and Smartphones."
The medical program, which aimed to address burgeoning addiction issues, was held on December 27 at the Library Hall of the Faculty of Dentistry of JMI. Dr. Ankit Sharma, HEAL Foundations' Head of Strategy and Communications, steered the event as the moderator, outlining the topic's significance and setting the agenda. Dean Prof. (Dr.) Keya Sircar welcomed attendees, underscoring the imperative to acknowledge emerging addictions like smartphone dependency and their detrimental impact.
The sessions featured esteemed guest speakers: Dr. Mohsin Wali (Padma Shri), Senior Consultant in Medicine at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, Delhi, and Dr. Jatinder Kumar, Senior Neurosurgeon and Director of Medical Services at Yashoda Medicity, Delhi.
Aim Behind JMI CME Program
This event aimed to enlighten dental professionals about the escalating burden of addiction, examining its repercussions on individual health and society. It delved into global strategies countering drug, tobacco, alcohol, and smartphone addiction, exploring their adaptability in India. Evidence-based approaches for addiction prevention, early intervention, and treatment were also discussed.
The sessions primarily focused on global de-addiction strategies and their contextual relevance in India. Experts provided insights into successful international de-addiction programs, offering comparative analyses to gauge effectiveness. Attention centered on tobacco addiction's impact on oral and overall health. Tailored interventions, considering India's cultural and socioeconomic diversity, were emphasized.
Discussions encompassed myths and facts related to heart health, proposing interventions for promoting a healthy lifestyle. Recommendations included comprehensive awareness campaigns, stringent regulations, and integrating de-addiction initiatives into healthcare systems. Notably, the discussions delved into smartphone addiction, addressing its modern challenges. Speakers highlighted technology's impact on mental health and proposed measures for responsible usage.
