New Delhi: Jamia Millia Islamia has successfully organised the Online International Conference on “Climate Change, Disaster Management and Environmental Sustainability”. The conference was held by the Department of Geography, Faculty of Science on February 21 and 22, 2024.
On this occasion, Jamia Millia Islamia’s Head of the Geography Department, Prof. Haroon Sajjad, welcomed the guests, officials, faculty members, delegates and researchers from India and other countries.
In his inaugural address, Vice Chancellor of JMI, Prof. Eqbal Hussain, highlighted the heat waves occurring with greater frequency and intensity and posing threats to livelihoods and ecosystems. The web of life upon which we are all dependent is facing unprecedented strain.
He emphasized that it is our sacred duty as academicians to close the gap between knowledge and action. This meeting serves as evidence of that obligation. He stated, "Here, we bring together academicians, geographers, and creative minds from around the world to share ideas, plan solutions, and ignite creativity in catastrophe risk reduction”.
Key Speakers of JMI International Conference on Climate Change 2024

The conference's keynote speaker, Prof. (Dr.) Md. Nazrul Islam of Jahangir Nagar University in Dhaka, Bangladesh, focused his speech on the effects of climate change on several habitats, including marshes, deserts, and forests.
Prof. Geeta Bhatt, Director of NCWEB University of Delhi, made a connection between the old Indian religious scripture and climate change challenges. In his speech, Dr. S.D. Attri, Member (Technical), CAQM, Ministry of Earth Sciences, Government of India, noted how the problems of air, water, floods, and drought are getting worse every year.
The conference's organizing secretary, Prof. Taruna Bansal, gave a comprehensive report on problems in the twenty-first century that come in a variety of shapes, spanning national boundaries and entwining the social, cultural, and environmental spheres. Vulnerable populations are greatly impacted by these issues, which increases their vulnerability to shocks and disasters brought on by climate change. It is essential to take immediate action, he added.
