New Delhi: Maharashtra has approved a complete academic fee waiver for girls from families with a total income of INR 8 Lakh or less. The state will reimburse the entire amount, anticipating a positive impact on girls' enrollment in higher education. Chandrakant Patil, Maharashtra's Minister of Higher and Technical Education, announced this decision during Friday's Joint Board of Vice-Chancellors (JBVC) meeting.
The existing 50 per cent academic fee waiver for the same income category has now been extended to 100 per cent. Patil emphasised the need for universities to actively encourage higher enrollment of girls across various fields. He urged Vice-Chancellors to conduct unique campaigns for this purpose and underscored the importance of timely result declarations by universities.

Ramesh Bais, Governor of Maharashtra and Chancellor of all state universities, chaired the JBVC meeting. He urged all Vice-Chancellors to ensure timely result declarations to prevent students from missing academic years or job opportunities due to result delays. The Governor had expressed a similar concern the previous year and emphasised that Vice-Chancellors would be held accountable for delayed results and mark-sheet dispensation.

Highlighting the demand for skilled manpower from India by countries like Germany, Japan, Israel, and others, Governor Bais stressed the importance of universities offering skill-based and job-oriented courses. He also directed Vice-Chancellors to adopt ten villages within their university's jurisdiction to contribute to academic and social development in rural areas.
Governor Bais also urged universities to enhance their involvement in the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF). They requested them to provide a comprehensive report on the National Education Policy (NEP) implementation and the corresponding actions taken.
