Maritime Innovation Hub To Be Established at IIT Madras

New Delhi: The Union Minister of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal announced that a maritime innovation centre will be established at IIT Madras to support startups and innovation in the maritime industry, on April 24, 2023 (Monday). At the IIT Madras satellite campus in Thaiyur, which is around 36 Km outside the city, he officially opened the National Technology Centre for Ports, Waterways, and Coasts (NTC PWC), which cost 77 crore to build.

“In the fields of sediment transportation, navigation, dredging and siltation, port and coastal engineering, autonomous platforms and vehicles, hydrodynamics, and ocean renewable energy. This facility will serve as a thriving information hub for students, business, and academics. It provides tailored solutions to particular industry sectors, decreasing reliance on overseas research laboratories, consultancy, and their exorbitant solutions”, according to Sonowal. These goods have generated real advantages and cost savings of over 1500 crore. We have taken this step towards "Atma Nirbhar Bharat," he added.

The NTC PWC is located on four acres of land and features roughly five cutting-edge labs, including one for sediment management and a sizable shallow water facility called a test basin. The minister added that NTC PWC would be enlarged to include top-notch multifunctional maritime laboratories in the fields of marine robotics, climate change, smart modelling, and simulation.

In order to participate in the MTech programmes, training sessions, high-level research, and technological development, NTC PWC, IIT Madras, and Indian Maritime University have teamed together. Sunil Paliwal, the chairman of the Chennai Port Trust, claimed that academic institutions and research institutes such as NTC PWC, IIT Madras, and Anna University have assisted the Chennai Port in resolving practical issues arising from several events. Director of IIT Madras V Kamakoti stated that the institution was honoured to serve as the foundation for the Sagarmala programme which entails building jetties across fishing and small harbours and utilising urban water transportation. "Chennai intracity waterways, including the Buckingham canal can also be considered for transport under the initiative," he stated.

The researchers gave a brief description of the unique initiatives being carried out at NTC PWC and displayed the equipment for shallow wave basins. Professor Murali of NTC PWC, vice chancellor of Indian Maritime University Malini Shankar, and other attendees took part in the ceremony.
