Medical Aspirants Urges NMC for NEET SS 2023 Cut-off Review and Mop-up Round

New Delhi: The medical professionals and candidates are calling upon the National Medical Commission (NMC) to reconsider the cut-off for the National Eligibility Entrance Test for Super-specialty (NEET SS) 2023. They advocate for the announcement of a mop-up round to address the more than 400 vacant seats in DM, MCh, and DrNB disciplines following the second round of NEET SS counselling 2023.

The United Doctors’ Front Association (UDFA) have written a letter to the Ministry of Family and Health Welfare (MoFHW), highlighting the challenges faced by students.

Following the conclusion of Round 2 of NEET SS counselling, a significant number of vacant DM/MCh/DrNB seats have come to light. The association urged for a reconsideration of the cut-off percentile, aligning it with the percentiles observed in NEET PG 2023 and the previous year's NEET SS Examination, the letter stated.

Demanding a need for a specialized mop-up counselling round, the UDFA asserted that an unusual delay occurred during the exam on September 29 and 30, 2023. They argued that technical errors led to rescheduling, causing candidates hypoglycemic issues and anxiety due to an early reporting time.

Despite post-exam assurances, the group added that the absence of substantial measures to address these concerns affected well-prepared candidates' performance.

The doctors’ association submitted an additional letter signed by NEET SS 2023 candidates. According to the letter, the vacant seats from candidates not joining after the second counselling round, those upgraded from round 1, and those left by INI SS candidates will contribute to the growing number of unoccupied seats, in addition to those remaining vacant after the second round.

The aspirants urged the consideration of announcing early mop-up counselling this year. They requested a reduction in the cut-off percentile to the minimum, ensuring 100% participation, similar to the procedures followed in NEET SS 2021 and NEET PG 2023 counselling, where percentile requirements were not imposed.

The medical professionals and candidates highlighted to the authorities that the delayed scheduling of the mop-up round would result in a postponement of the academic session, thesis protocol submission, and potential course and tenure extensions.

Further, the UDFA letter mentioned that the Supreme Court had recently expressed concern about vacancies in super-speciality seats. In response, the court urged the union government and the Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) to collaboratively find a solution to ensure none of the seats go wasted.
