The past few years have shown an alarming trend of dropping enrollment rates for MTech courses across India. The reason for the dropping enrollments could simply be a question of demand and supply or an indicator of the necessity of MTech courses.

MTech Enrollments Drops Across India Top Colleges Making Efforts to Get More MTech Students

New Delhi: In the past few years, admissions for MTech courses have been dropping in India. While enrollment into BTech courses shows 81% enrollment, the 2022-23 enrollment rate for MTech courses is a mere 33%.

The percentage of seats filled for MTech courses in states such as Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, and Karnataka seems to be dwindling over the years, even as MTech enrollments in states such as Bihar and West Bengal are on the rise.

What is the Percentage of MTech Seats Filled Over the Years?

The table below elucidates the percentage of MTech seats filled in various states from 2021 to 2023:

States Percentage of seats filled in 2020-21 Percentage of seats filled in 2021-22 Percentage of seats filled in 2022-23
Madhya Pradesh 61.5% 62% 51%
Maharashtra 48% 37% 33.8%
Karnataka 47% 33% 32.6%
Telangana 42.3% 36.6% 30%
Tamil Nadu 35% 46.5% 37.6%
Andhra Pradesh 32% 26% 23%

The decrease in MTech enrollments, even in top colleges for MTech like NIT Uttarakhand, MIT Manipal, and IGDTUW, is certainly a cause of concern. Many colleges are beginning to reconsider their fees, update their curriculums according to industry requirements, strengthen ties with alumnae, and introduce innovative teaching methods to their MTech courses in the hopes of attracting more students.

AICTE Member Secretary Rajive Kumar commented on the MTech enrollments, saying, “This is an area which we are also concerned about. MTech enrolment is decreasing even at IIT and NIT. We provide scholarships of Rs 12,700 per month and till January 31, only about 4,500 students or so had registered. Earlier, the number used to be around 9,000 to 10,000.”

What Could Be the Reasons Behind Decrease in MTech Enrollments?

The answer could be as simple as demand and supply, according to a professor at NIT Uttarakhand. “[The] supply [of MTech courses] is more as the number of institutions is more, but we have not been able to build on the infrastructure in terms of providing research labs and faculty strength and students' level has degraded,’ the professor explained.

The professor also surmised that BTech students were more likely to get hired for lower salaries than MTech students. They said, “Why will companies hire masters' students when they can hire BTech students in a much lesser salary bracket? They will be put on training for six months and get the same output as masters’ students.”

Another reason for the declining popularity of MTech courses could be the increasing access to PhD programs directly after BTech. IGDTUW Vice Chancellor Amita Dev remarked, “We get a whole lot of students for PhD. As the program [is for] four years and [UG] students can get direct entry into PhD programs if they earn the necessary credits, many do not join master’s courses.”
