NEET PG 2023 Cut-Off to Be Lowered, NMC Responds to Medical Associations' Demands; Check Details Here

New Delhi: Dr. Harish Gupta, a member of the National Medical Commission (NMC), has announced that the NEET PG cut-off for 2023 will be reduced.

This decision comes in response to the demands of medical associations, such as the Federation of Resident Doctors Association (FORDA) and the Indian Medical Association (IMA), who have been advocating for a revision in the NEET PG cut-off criteria for the past month. These associations have urged for a reduction of the cut-off by up to 30 percent.

Currently, the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test Postgraduate (NEET PG) cut-off percentile stands at 50 for unreserved categories, 45 for PwD categories, and 40 for reserved category students. Also, the NMC has not yet announced the results for round 3 seat allotment, which were initially scheduled to be released on September 16.

The NEET PG cut-off percentile currently stands at 50 for unreserved categories, 45 for PwD categories, and 40 for reserved category students. The NMC has not yet disclosed the results for round 3 seat allotment, which were originally scheduled for release on September 16.

According to the reports, Dr. Gupta, has highlighted that reducing the cut-off percentile should not be seen as compromising the quality of medical education, as the students have already demonstrated their proficiency by successfully completing the rigorous MBBS syllabus and the 5 year MBBS course, which is designed to meet the healthcare needs of the country, he added.

However, the NMC member has not yet confirmed the announcement date for the decreased NEET PG cut-off or the specific revised cut-off values.

Many PwD candidates have taken to social media platforms to request the commission to release the revised cut-off before the round-3 seat allotment results are issued, as this transition would convert all seats into general category seats.

In a letter dated September 13, the Indian Medical Association (IMA) appealed to the Union Minister of Health and Family Welfare, urging a reevaluation of the cut-off criteria to admit a greater number of students into postgraduate programs and reduce the recurring issue of unoccupied seats. Last year, a significant 3,744 seats remained unfilled following the NEET PG counseling  process.

Dr. Sharad Kumar Agarwal, President of the IMA, highlighted that lowering the cut-off would not only reduce the problem of annual seat vacancies but also improve the medical education system by ensuring an adequate number of qualified faculty members within the next three years.

In addressing why these seats remain vacant despite a substantial number of applications and MBBS students, the president pointed out that the NEET PG exam's nature creates a disparity between the difficulty level of the question papers and the curriculum established for state medical colleges.

Further, Agarwal said that the National Medical Commission (NMC) should revisit the composition of the examination papers and the curriculum framework within medical colleges to bridge the significant gap that currently exists.

Adding that the NMC should consider lowering the difficulty level of the NEET PG question paper  to include a larger pool of aspirants who can successfully pass the exam, he remarked that accommodating more students who pass the exam wouldn't necessarily lead to a decline in the quality of practicing doctors or have a detrimental impact on the nation's healthcare services.

It can be noted that the National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences (NBEMS) has been regularly revising the NEET PG cut-off since 2017. Over the years, the cut-off for general category candidates has seen reductions, starting from the 50th percentile in 2017 down to 35th percentile in 2021 and 2022.

Moreover, in the previous year, the cut-off for unreserved PwD candidates dropped from the 45th percentile to the 20th percentile, while for students under SC, ST, OBC (including PwD of SC, ST, OBC), it was reduced to the 20th percentile from the initial 40th percentile.
