New Delhi: As per the latest updates, the Supreme Court has dismissed the plea challenging the requirement for JEE Advanced candidates to have at least 75% marks in the class 12th board exam to appear for the entrance exam on May 29, 2023 (Monday).
The plea challenging the JEE Advanced eligibility criteria was heard by the bench of Justices Sudhanshu Dhulia and KV Viswanathan. The bench shared that the eligibility criteria for the exam were waived during the COVID-19 pandemic but it was later subsequently revived.
Dismissing the plea, Justice Dhulia said, "2016, 2017, 2018... This condition was always there that students must have secured 75 per cent, why should we interfere? This is not a matter we want to get into''. Earlier, the plea was submitted to challenge the criteria required to appear for JEE Advance for seeking admission to various undergraduate courses offered by top IITs.
The criteria state that candidates must have at least 75% marks in their class 12th to be eligible for the entrance test. Speaking on behalf of the petitioners, the counsel said, “During COVID-19, the NTA allowed students to take the JEE Advanced exam without the assessment in Class XII. These students who were allowed during the pandemic are not being permitted to take the examination because this condition is brought back”.
“Some of these students have obtained more than 98.8% in JEE Mains”, the counsel added while stating that aspirants' fundamental rights are being violated due to this criteria. However, the bench has refused to entertain any application against this issue by aspirants who have secured 10 marks short of 75% aggregate marks and secured 92% marks in JEE Mains.
