UGC Plans for CUET UG Common Admission Counselling; Selects JNU and BHU Among Others for Pilot Trial

New Delhi: The University Grants Commission (UGC) has decided to include common counselling for UG admissions through the Common University Entrance Test (CUET) UG. A committee has been formed to devise the plans to implement the counselling process.

As of now, five universities have been chosen as pilot institutes to test out the plan - Banaras Hindu University, Jawaharlal Nehru University, University of Hyderabad, Kashmir University, and Mizoram University. The common counselling process will ensure that no seats are left vacant in central universities due to delayed admission procedures.

The universities participating in the common counselling will have to come up with a unified merit list based on CUET UG scores, like the standardized merit lists for the JEE or the NEET exams. The National Testing Agency will conduct the centralised exam and declare the results.

A UG official commented on the plan, saying, “We are not sure how this will be done and how feasible the process is. As each university is diverse and has its own process, integrating it is not easy. Such changes require long-term planning.”

Around 196 universities currently accept CUET UG scores for their admission procedures. There is no confirmation from the UGC or the universities chosen whether the CUET UG 2024 common counselling plan will be implemented for 2024. The CUET UG 2024 exam date is May 15 to 31, 2024. Registrations have been extended until March 31.
