West Bengal Board Class 12 Curriculum Revised; Marking Scheme Changed, New Subjects Introduced

New Delhi: The West Bengal Council of Higher Secondary Education (WBCHSE) has announced certain changes in the Class 12 curriculum to be put into effect from the academic session 2024-25. The students who will register for their Class 12 studies this year will be the first batch to go through the new curriculum.

The changes have been brought in the marking scheme of some subjects. The board has also discontinued some subjects due to low registration and aswell introduced some new subjects for students to opt for. We have explained the changes in details below:

Revision in WBCHSE Marks Distribution

The board has revised the theory component of health and family education from 40 percent weightage to 70 percent. Consecutively, the practical paper will consist of 30 per cent of total marks.

The weightage for theory and practical marks for music and visual arts has been revised to 50 percent each.

Change in Subjects Available

The West Bengal Board has taken the decision to discontinue Punjabi, Gujarati, and French subjects due to low student registration. Instead of these, the board has introduced new vocational subjects to cater to the evolving interests of the students. Banking financial services and insurance, food processing, and telecom are some of the newly added vocational subjects.

WBCHSE has also introduced new academic subjects: applied artificial intelligence, cyber security, and the science of well-being. The aim of this inclusion is to equip the students with relevant and contemporary knowledge in emerging fields.

Changes Made in Subject Name and Code

The council has renamed three subjects and also changed the subject code of some. The home management and family resource (HMFR) will now be called the human development and resource management (HDRM). While the agronomy (AGNM) has been renamed as agriculture (AGRI). The health and physical education (PHED) will be called the same but the code for it, is changed to HPED.

The students who have been promoted to class 12 for the academic session 2024-25 are advised to keep the changes in mind while registering for their HS Board Exam. The changes are aimed to make education relatable and interesting for the students and shall prepare them on diverse topics.
