Should I go for B.Tech Mathematics and Computing in IIT Delhi or B.Tech Automotive Engineering in DTU?

IIT Delhi’s B.Tech Mathematics and Computing offers a rigorous curriculum that dives deep into high-level mathematics and computer science, making it perfect if you have a passion for both fields. The internship opportunities are stellar, especially for quant roles, and the placement stats are impressive, with top firms like Jane Street offering jaw-dropping packages. In contrast, B.Tech Automotive Engineering at DTU likely focuses more on practical applications in the automotive sector, which might appeal if that’s your passion, but the data on campus life and faculty isn’t as strong. If you’re leaning towards a tech career with high earning potential, IIT Delhi is the way to go; however, if you’re set on automotive engineering and prefer a hands-on experience, DTU could be a great fit. Overall, I’d personally choose IIT Delhi for its stronger placement opportunities and diverse curriculum.

• The quality of education you find at IITs is often matched at DTU, and in some cases, the hefty packages too!

In 2017, the highest package offered was around 12.5 MILLION INR to a CSE student, which speaks volumes about the education quality and the environment at the college. If you're looking at IITs for those packages, you won't be disappointed with DTU either. However, if you're willing to put in the hard work during your engineering studies, then getting into any IIT or DTU won't make a significant difference in your career.

I’m currently a student at DTU, pursuing Automotive Engineering. I’ll be sitting for placements this July, so I can offer you some insights.

Firstly, it’s important to note that Automotive Engineering is a branch of Mechanical Engineering. About 80 percent of the syllabus overlaps with Mechanical Engineering.

Additionally, we study 5 to 6 subjects related to Production and Industrial Engineering.

Here are some key points to consider:

• Placement Opportunities: Around 70 percent of companies that recruit for Mechanical Engineering also consider us. This can be a drawback since our branch is often perceived as similar to Mechanical Engineering due to the name change.
• Research and Activities: DTU provides ample research opportunities and co-curricular activities, which can enhance your overall experience.

I would suggest you consider dropping the idea if you’re not confident about scoring better. Otherwise, go for it!

Having spent two years studying Mathematics and Computing at DTU, here are some relevant facts about this branch as of 2018.

• Math-Centric Focus: MC is heavily focused on mathematics, so consider this only if you have a strong foundation in the subject. The syllabus was updated in 2016, introducing important topics and new-generation electives. There’s also a significant portion of computer-related subjects, ensuring you won't miss out on coding and core CS skills.
• Quality Faculty: The faculty is good. If you attend lectures regularly and maintain a good rapport with professors, you won’t have any trouble grasping the material. The Department of Applied Mathematics boasts some of the best and most renowned professors at DTU.
• Growing Industrial Recognition: This branch is rapidly gaining recognition in the industry. Interviewers tend to take math undergraduates more seriously for core technical roles that require analytical and computational skills.
• Exclusivity Advantage: A major factor driving demand for MC. Currently, only DTU, IIT-Delhi, IIT-Guwahati, IIT-Hyderabad, and IIIT-Delhi offer a B.Tech in Mathematics and Computing. This means there are fewer than 1000 MC undergraduates.

I think if you're aiming for high-paying tech or finance roles, B.Tech in Mathematics and Computing from IIT Delhi is the way to go. The internship opportunities there are incredible, with quant firms offering stipends that can reach up to 20 lacs for international roles, and the placement rates are stellar, boasting companies like Google and Jane Street. In contrast, while B.Tech in Automotive Engineering at DTU has good prospects, the focus is narrower, primarily within the automotive sector. So, if you want broader career options and lucrative packages, IIT Delhi is definitely the better choice. But if you're passionate about automotive engineering specifically, DTU could still be a great fit.
