Remarks
The management works along with the students to ensure a smooth operation of all aspects of the college. While sometimes the decisions end up infuriating for the students, in the end the management tries to put it's best effort.
Course Curriculum Overview
The course mostly follows the standardized curriculum as in all IITs and NITs, differing slightly to accommodate local factors. The college provides students ample resources and funding for students to undertake their own projects, research, and other activities. The course is also updated regularly and keeping with the times. Industrial visits are quite regular, with atleast one every semester, and latest developments in the industrial sectrosrs is regularly discussed.
Placement Experience
The placement scenario is quite good, with several reputed companies like General electric, Power grid corporation of India, Goldman Sachs, among others recruiting 94 percent of the students in the college. The placement takes place in thouree rounds, one testing one's aptide, followed by a hour round, finally leading on to a technical round. Mock interview and job cracking sessions are organized regularly, both by the departments, and also the Training and Placement cell, to prepare students for the interviews and examinations going forward. The Training and Placement Cell also provides internship opportunities at the end of third year for the students, based on their aptitude and abilities.
College Events
Tecnoesis is the annual techno management festival in NIT Silchar, celebrated during the odd semesters. drawing in participants from all over the countryThe first two nights of the festival are spent with students showing off their technical prowess on modules like robotron, archinova, along with a gaming module of v-warz among others. The last night of this festival is a cultural night, with performances of a lifetime. Incandescence is the annual cultural festival of NIT Silchar, with a fashion show, a battle of bands, and of course, Thundermarch, the largest metal concert/competition in North-Eastern India
Fee Structure And Facilities
An amount of approximately Rs. 1.85 lakhs is charged every year as college fees. The fee structure is quite reasonable, with consideration being given to people with different incone brackets in terms of tuition fees and the like. Every bit of the fee system is transparent, with an itemized list being provided, and is updated on the official website of NIT Silchar before fee payment every year.
Fees and Financial Aid
The college offers several scholarship programmes for students without means, along with several opportunities to students belonging to SC/ ST/ OBC, and other underprivileged communities. The average scholarship sums provided are in the range of Rs 500- 20000 per month. I personally did not need to avail any scholarship.
Campus Life
The campus life in NIT Silchar is very busy and fulfilling, with regular events and competitions occurring every week. The various clubs, including the dance club, drama club, literature club, robotics club, coding club, and other such clubs organize regular workshops and programs for their members and other students. Dorm parties almost every week are the norm, involving copious amounts of reasonably priced alcohol. Due to students from all over the country and different ethnicities staying in the same place, tolerance, and Infact intermingling, is the norm. Being a technical institution however, the sex ratio is terrible, however steps are being taken to rectify this issue.
Hostel Facilities
Yes. I live in Hostel 7, one of the relatively newer hostels. The rooms are spacious and open, with thouree second year students being allotted each room. There are a total of 4000 hostel seats in the various hostels spread all over the campus. The hostels also come with a mess that provide hyegenic, clean food to the students. Additionally, the hostels come equipped with a reading room, a tiny canteen, and a football ground, a volleyball ground, and a TV room, along with a common room.
Alumni/Alumna
Senior students are quite helpful, and the best resources to survive campus life. A minor bit of scaring aside, the seniors help you in all your needs, from assignments to romantic issues. Similarly, the alumni network is pretty good too, and generally help students out by internships and industry knowledge. This college tends to give people memories that last forever.
Admission
Admission to NIT Silchar is obtained thourough JOSAA counselling, after gaining eligibility by giving JEE(MAIN) for engineering. Based on the rank thus obtained, and the preference list for colleges filled online, a branch is alloted among all of the NITs and other engineering colleges. After that, one has the option to either freeze at that particular branch at the same college, or choose float for a different branch at the same college, or move on to the next round of counselling. All in all there are 7 rounds of counselling, with all thouree options available for the first 6, and the first two options for the last. Generally all these processes take place over July and August, and I ended up choosing electrical engineering, both because it fascinates me, and also because it is tough for me to sit still for long periods of time, so computer science and electronics ere out of the question.
Faculty
For the electrical engineering department, there are a significantly large number( around 30) of faculty members to help the students. The associate professors generally have an experience of around five years, and often come fresh from the industry. Most of the associate professors have PhDs along with a few published paprs under their belt. The assistant professors generally have an experience of around ten years, and undergo regular training and recertification. Assistant professors have quite a few published papers, regarding the various fields of research they have done. The senior professors are highly experienced, often having been teaching for fifteen or more years, having taken part in several research projects, and mentoring and assisting several students to achieve excellence in their chosen fields. The faculty of our college are very supportive and helpful in dealing with several problems the students might face in their time in the college.
