Remarks
If there is praise, there must also be criticism. Although I have praised my college in a number of fields, I must criticise about the administrative office. They are slow to respond to the students and are very sloppy in their work. It would benefit us all if they could be more sensitive to us students and care for our well-being more than they do now. Another thing which I must surely mention is just how amazing our principal, Dr. Inderjeet Singh Bakshi, is. He is truely a father figure for all the students and cares for us more than all the teaching and administrative staff of the college. I can say without hesitation, there would be no other Principal in the whole of India, who would care for the students more than our principal does.
Entrance Preview
I didn't give any particular entrance examination. However, I did have to pass my HSSLC (Higher Secondary School Leaveing Certificate) Examination. I got 58.6% in this examination. I chose Dyal Singh College mainly because of its prestigious teaching staff including the Principal. The fact that it is situated in the central part of Delhi also played an important role. The college is close to a metro station and this makes it easier to travel to the college no matter where I am staying. I chose B.A. [Prog] course because it offers a vast array of subjects to be studied during its 3-year course (6 semester course). We get to choose our own subjects according to our interests and gives us the advantage of being able to study different and diverse subjects instead of focusing only on one subject. Moreover, we have the freedom to drop subjects if we do not like them in the next academic year.
Course Curriculum Overview
As I have said before, since we get to choose our own subjects, we have the upper hand when it comes to our course. It is different from Honours subjects in the sense that we do not focus only on one particular subject, but we take on many different subjects throughout the study of our course. We also have the freedom to choose these subjects as we please. This helps us because we have the chance to expand our knowledge and pursue our interest in case we are interested in two different subjects. Although we do not do extensive research on these subjects, we cover all the basics so that we have a fundamental knowledge for all the subjects we study.
Internships Opportunities
For our course ( B.A. [Prog] ) there are no internships offered. The college does offer internship for students of commerce and science course. However, there are none available for students of humanities stream.
Placement Experience
I am sorry but I cannot answer this question in detail. Since job placements were not offered to our particular course, I don't have any knowledge of what companies came to our campus. However, I do know that a bunch of companies came for the commerce stream. I don't know how much they were offering, but there were quite a few good jobs offered.
College Events
Our college does things quite differently when it comes to festivals and events. All other colleges under Delhi University have their own college fest which is organised by the college. For our college, we dont have any particular college fest but we do have a fest which is organised and held by the commerce department. This fest is called 'Communique' and the whole college takes part in this festival. Passed out students and member of the alumni are also invited to take part in this festival. The commerce department does an excellent job in conducting, managing and organising the festival.
Fee Structure And Facilities
In our college, fees are collected twice in an academic year. We give admission fees at the start of the year. It is quite feasible as compared to other course in different institutions. It is not that costly and on the plus side, we give it only once a year. Another fee which we have to suit is the exam fees. We pay this fee before every semester examination. This fee is also not that expensive.
Fees and Financial Aid
Unfortunately, our college does not offer any scholarship or loan facility. However, they do support us wholeheartedly when we avail for scholarships from an external source.
Campus Life
The gender ratio would probably be 2:1 with boys being the larger number the students are friendly and there are no such things as ragging, discrimination or racism. Since the student body is quite diverse, we all try our best to get along with each other. There are students from north-east, southern and north India and even foreign students. Our college is really diverse when it comes to race. We all take part together in different activities like sports, workshops, festivals, etc. However, it would be better for all the students if the different societies would open up to more people such as the North-East society being open to other people and so on.
Hostel Facilities
Our college does not have a hostel. So normally, most of the students stay in PGs. The cost for boys PG and girls PG differs. For girls it would be around 8000 rupees per month whule for us boys, it is 12000 rupees per month. One room is shared by two people each and it is quite spacious. We have our own toilets for each room and bed and tables including chairs are provided to us we get three meals per day however, the food is usually too spicy and sour for our taste. This is the only thing I have to complain about the PG. It would be favourable if the quality of the food could be improved if they are collecting money from us for food anyway.
Alumni/Alumna
The senior students and also passed out students are quite helpful especially in our particular community. They come to the college from time to time and they are always ready to help us no matter the trouble. They also never reject/neglect our invitation to our college fest, community fest, etc.
Exam Structure
I don't think any student would be chilled out on the day of an examination. That being said, the examination atmosphere is quite calm and its all thanks to the good organisation of rooms and seats by the college. However, it can get quite hectic during early morning as seats are alotted only 15 minutes prior to the examination. So students have to fight to get their alotted seats before time. Apart from this, the examination process is handled well.
Admission
I was a bit unlucky but also lucky during my admission process. Let me explain. The year in which I took admission was 2014. During that time, there was a bit of confusion and protest regarding the 4-year Under-Graduate course in Delhi University. Although the admission forms were given out on time, the actual admission process was delayed for quite a long time. I arrived in Delhi on 1st June 2016 and had to wait till July for the cut-off marks to be anounced. So in that sense, I was a bit unlucky. However, I was also lucky because when the cut-off marks came out, even thought I scored less in my HSSLC examination, the cut-off marks for B.A [Prog] course was low. I went to the college and handed in my admission form without any big problem. The Principal was kind enough to take my form personally. My admission process was fairly easy even though it was delayed.
Faculty
This is a difficult question to answer. I cannot say that all the members of the teaching faculty are upto college level standards. However, I do have to say, some of them are truely inspirational and they take their job quite seriously. They care about the students and they are really knowledgable about their respective subjects. On the other hand, some teachers are lazy and they are not at all fit to teach in colleges. Some of them even know less than the students and don't even speak english.
