Hansraj College, BA {Hons.}, Mathematics

Remarks

The college management overall is good in their prospects but I suppose they still need to work on few things like getting their Alumni connected, having more frequent tests to check on students understanding and few methodologies to keep track of teachers teaching procedures as well.

Entrance Preview

Admission was done through CBSE board results and I scored 88% with best of four. I desperately wanted B.Sc (Hons) Mathematics as i had interest in maths but never realised the difference in B.A(Hons.) & B.Sc(Hons.). Unfortunately was not able to make through the cut off of Hansraj B.Sc(Hons.) & was really disappointed but then Mrs. Harjeet Kaur came as a guiding angel and gave me admission in B.A(Hons.) saying the difference is only in the secondary subjects which at that time didn't have much weightage.

Course Curriculum Overview

4

Course curriculum is well organised and has complete focus on the analysis & research part. Completely different from class 12th number game mathematics. Subjects like real analysis start from 1st year itself which gets more complex as we go to the next year. Really helpful for students who plan to do any mathematical research paper or who plan to take teaching or lectureship as their profession as makes them understand the originality and basis of the number system which in turn works as support in their research work and mixing up with kids in their profession. I particularly mentioned kids in profession for those who plan to take up teaching as profession as nowadays whether it's school kids or college kids the moment they see a young teacher somehow start popping up so many different questions that untill you are clear with the basics & origin of number systems and geometry works you can't answer them in the same class. Once we are able to do that we have won half the battle of grabbing their attention on the black board.

Internships Opportunities

College did have some internship programs but not on a very high scale as they had just started to work on those projects. During our days Accenture was one of the companies that came to our college for internship program. This is any hows almost 10 years back I am talking about so now I am sure things must have changed and our college would have been calling good companies for it's internship programs.

Placement Experience

2

I passed out in 2007 and during those days everyone was having plans of doing masters after their graduations. If we compare Mathematics (Hons.) not much companies came for campus placement but yes for B.Sc(Hons.) Computers & BA(Hons.) Economics few companies did come like Accenture, Google, American Express and E&Y. Unfortunately since I was not in the league of getting selected or even pitching for it never took the interest of knowing what was the offer made.

College Events

4.5

Many cultural and technical events were been organised by our college & it's different departments. There use to be various societies like dance, music & drama societies which would organised their events in the college fests. Every department use to have their own departmental fests wherein students from various colleges would come and take part in various events like JAM sessions, Group discussions, Debates, Slogan competitions guessing the logo, etc.

Fee Structure And Facilities

The fee structure is very nominal and easy on pockets. Had to pay an annual fee and apart from that the college never bothered or forced students for paying for any different nick nacks. I paid an annual fees of Rs. 4000/- per year. Apart from this if we have to purchase any books it's all our own cost. we had options of getting it issued from Library or even getting the 2nd hand books at much reasonable costs from the local kamla nagar market which across the street.

Fees and Financial Aid

I don't remember any student taking any loan facility in college and even searching for loan facility which could be due to the fee structure that was in college was so minimal that it was easily arranged by all.

Campus Life

4.5

Campus life was fun in it's own ways. The sexual ratio was almost balanced in all classes but yes particularly in Mathematics & English there was an imbalance with girls outshouting the number of boys in class. we hardly had 10 boys in comparison to 42 girls. But the campus environment was such that it never was a concern. Extracurricular competitions were not round the year but they were there for 3-4 months when all colleges had their fests. Societies use to work round the year to excel during those 3-4 months.

Hostel Facilities

2.5

There was hosterl facility only for boys and not for girls which could be basically because college had to take more responsibility if they had girls hostel. Boys hostel was on sharing basis don't know the cost but surely had limited seats. Out-stationed girls stayed in PGs which were in large numbers in Kamla nagar & nearby areas as the entire area was campus arena. PG's would cost around Rs. 5k - 7k per month which includes food. Then there were many further categories depending on what facilities we are looking at.

Alumni/Alumna

In my opinion college really needs to work hard to build a good alumni network which I havn't seen till date. They should get a proper team of students on this work and dig out the various alumni contacts which in turn could result in real good campus placement options for future.

Exam Structure

Exams had never been a tension taking point as they had half yearly exam pattern so not much of a heck. College gave us proper breaks to study and prepare for it. Teachers always use to be on time for completing their courses and never was a burden to come to college for finishing off the left over courses that would come in exam but had not been covered in class yet.

Faculty

4

Faculty is always a mix of both. Every institute if taken as a basket of fruit will have few delicious and few not so delicious fruits. Keeping this in mind there were faculties who were amazing with their teaching skills like Mrs. Harjit Kaur, Ms. Nidhi, Principal (who taught us & we use to be like wet chickens in his class;)) & Neelam ma'am well qualified teachers with great methods of teaching.

Placement Experience:

Placements are available in college, the drive is quite extensive, everyone is made aware of the choices and options and counselling is present too. It is from the third year, students are eligible to apply for placements. Companies and organisations take part such as Niti ayog, Times, Geostrata, Prajatantra foundation, etc. Those who desire usually work on their CVs, keep on doi internships and then get a placement. The packages are not that impressive to be honest.

Course Curriculum Overview:

The course is really very interesting. It keeps up with our expectations. Involves both practical and theoretical aspects to make sure that we are able to face the real world. Also, with the help of the guidance that we get from teachers we're able to ace both the aspects. The examinations also are based on applications, thus, helping us to enhance ourselves in all possibilities.

I'm from south India so I don't understand Hindi properly. But here mostly they teach in Hindi only and English is used very rarely.

Course Curriculum Overview:

The course itself is prestigious and is mostly opted for by people who plan either on preparing for the Civil Services or those who want to pursue academia. The course structure is framed in a manner that you don't just simply study history there, but you ingrain a critical viewpoint of a young historian. The faculty of History Hons. has some of the best Professors in the University, although you will in any course at any college find some teachers below your expectations, you don't have to bear them for more than 1 or 2 semesters. Passing the exams is not very difficult, but yes scoring above average is. If you get a GPA ranging from 6 to 7, you've performed fine. Above that is considered a Very good performance in Hons. courses of Social sciences at Delhi University. there are semester exams every 5- 6 months
