Remarks
I did not apply to many colleges and only gave a few government exams, I was getting a college in Bangalore with my preferred branch but I did not opt for it because my parents were not comfortable in sending me to a far off place. I did not avail any quota for admissions. To get admission in my program, you either need to pass the UPESeat exam conducted by UPES or you need to have a 75% aggregate in PCM in the 12th standard or a decent rank in JEE mains. The admission process was pretty smooth and the counselling was pretty informative and exciting.
Course Curriculum Overview
Right from class 11th, I was sure that I want to make a career in computer science and I was adamant about doing so. UPES provides a wide variety of specializations under computer science which no other university in India does and it does get a little overwhelming for a sophomore to make a choice, it wasn't easy for me too but I was briefed at the counselling and then I made the choice. There is a very diverse section of faculty in UPES and they are all well versed in their subjects. The faculty is highly educated and motivate the students to do better. For someone who is willing to perform and exceed, there are many faculties to guide and help you. The term exams are always timely and the difficulty level is moderate from easy to difficult.
Placement Experience
The students become eligible for campus placements after the 6th semester. Xebia, IBM are some of the companies that have ties with UPES and come for placements every year. Adobe, Microsoft, Infosys, Wipro are few other names that visited for placements. The highest package ranges to around 18-24 LPA. 98% of students get placed according to the university. For now, I am planning to secure a good job after the degree.
Fees and Financial Aid
The fees is quite high for a middle class family and many people can't afford it. UPES does provide some financial assistance to some students. First they provide a quota of 75% to natives of Uttarakhand. ALso if you're a girl child, UPES does provide a 15% scholarship. The jobs are decent on campus and the average package is of 4-5 lpa.
Campus Life
The annual fest is called Uurja and it is conducted in October. The library is well equipped with an exquisite collection of paper books and e-books. Every classroom has a projector and whiteboard for the faculties. The campus is huge surrounded by mountains and the serene surroundings are just an add on to the student life. The campus is self sufficient with playgrounds, R&D, cafes, shopping complex, infirmary and salon. There are many student chapters for every talent.
