Remarks
The admission to the BTech course at all IITs is only through JEE Advanced, which is conducted by different IITs every year. Particularly for my year i.e. 2020, IIT Delhi conducted the exam. Students who qualify for JEE Mains and have a minimum of 75% marks in the 12th class (for the open category) are eligible for appearing in JEE Advanced. Students who qualify JEE Advanced get their all India ranks and then counselling by JOSAA is conducted in which students are needed to fill their choices for IITs, NITs, CFTIs and few other colleges in decreasing preference order (NOTE - students who didn't qualify JEE Advanced are not eligible for filling IITs in their choices). Counselling takes place in multiple rounds(6-7). Some seats in IITs are reserved for category students and girls. I got my seat through the SC quota. I got EEE in IIT Guwahati, which was at 13th rank in my preference list, all above that was computer science engineering in IITs, but I didn't get those according to my rank.
Course Curriculum Overview
I was having more interest in the core sector and govt. job, thats why I chose the EEE branch, which is a vast branch. Also it is one of the branch by which students can appear for IES exam. Although I gave higher preference to CSE branch during counselling, but it was only beacause of the higer packages of the branch. IIT Guwahati has a faculty student ratio of about 10:1 which is quiet good. All the faculty members are very highly qualified. As it is an IIT, no doubt on the teaching, its amazing. All professors are very expert in their fields. They are available every time for any academic help, one can call them whenever during office hours and they never dissapoint. For the current year, method of continue evaluation is being followed. Quizes are being conducted approx. every week for each course which have their own weightages and credits. It's not much difficult to pass the exams just attending the classes and revision before exam is enough for average marks.
Internships Opportunities
Many companies give internship opportunities in IITG. Some top ones are Amazon, Adobe, Ashok Leyland, Bank of India, Bosch, Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL), Coca Cola, Dell, Deloitte, Facebook, Flipkart, Google, Godrej, HCL, Infosys, ISRO, Mahindra, Phillips, Visa and many more. Internships are offered in the summer vacations between the 6th and 7th semesters for B.Tech and B.Des students.
Placement Experience
The students are eligible for placements after the 7th semester. Almost every tech giant visits the campus like Google, Microsoft, Amazon, Abobe, Nvdia and many more. This year 140 companies participated in the placements and a total of 686 students were placed. 444 out of 584 students from B.Tech and B.Des got job offers. The highest package for this year was 70 lakh per annum and the average package was 21.42 lakhs per annum which is higher than the last year. Overall 57.16% of students were placed and for B.Tech and B.Des., 76.02% of students were placed. I would like to get any core job in the placements.
Fees and Financial Aid
The fee structure is quite similar to an average private college like one student from the open category spends around 12 lacs during the entire 4-year BTech program. One has to pay 1,00,000 INR as tution fee and around 35,000 INR as hostel and mess fee per semester. But, there are different concessions based on category and financial conditions. For SC/ST/PWD students, there is no tution fee, they just need to pay hostel and mess fee. For economically backward students whose parent's annual income is below 1 lakh, the tution fee is fully waived, and with annual income between 1 and 5 lakhs, two-third of the tution fee is waived. There are many scholarships for category students in IITs. Also, every student can get a scholarship based on academic performance. Placements are very good in IIT Guwahati. Almost every tech giant comes for placements. Except for these, many PSUs approaches IITG. For the current year, the highest package was 70 lakhs and the average package was 20.62 lakhs.
Campus Life
Live the best campus life in IIT Guwahati campus. It is one of the most beautiful campuses in India. Its main beauty is the 3 big lakes on the campus itself, the weather in the city is also very good. Alcheringa is the annual fest of IITG which spreads over 3 days and 4 nights consisting of various activities and concerts with some very popular guests. It is conducted at end of January every year. Techniche is the annual tech fest. IITG has a very big library with a huge number of books. IITG also have a computer centre which also has a supercomputer 'PARAM-ISHAN". As this year was online, I can't comment on the classrooms. Every sport is available on campus-like swimming, hockey, squash, tennis, etc. Students can find clubs on evry topic like a literary club, photography, video making, music, acting, athletics, etc. The campus has a dedicated student activity centre for these clubs. Technothlon is a logic-based exam conducted by students fraternity of IITG all over the country for school students.
Hostel Facilities
The hostel provides all the basic necessaties. Each boy student gets a single room from the first year, while girls have a double sharing room. We get a table, chair, bed, fan, cupboard, wall lamp. Each room has a LAN connection with unlimited internet which gives a very nice speed. Also when we reach the campus for the first time, the college arranges shops for basic items like mattresses, bucket, cycles, curtains, etc. Each hostel have its own staationary shop and canteen. All basic daily needed products like soap, cosmetics, slippers, etc are available in the stationary shop itslef. Mess food is okaish, not very good but yes its nice according to a mess. Menu is very satisfying like we have different meal everyday (3 times a day). Mess has both veg and non-veg food. Hostels are allocated randomly to each student after their admission as hostels are compulsory for our college. There are no time restrictions for hostels. Hostels also have their own laundary, sports,TV, pantry, music room.
