Remarks
There are 3 steps to get admission to the IIT BTech course:- 1) Qualify JEE Mains examination 2) Qualify JEE Advanced examination 3) Apply for counselling conducted by JOSAA. In the counselling process, students have to fill their preferred choices of colleges and seats are alloted according to the ranks in JEE examination. (JEE Advanced rank is observed for IITs and mains rank for NITs, IIIt's and few other colleges). I got admitted under the ST reservation. Cutoff for JEE exams varies each year according to the availability of seats.
Course Curriculum Overview
I am a student of Electronics and Electrical Engineering at IIT Guwahati, I got this branch according to my preference filled in the JOSAA Counselling. The faculty-student ratio here at IIT Guwahati is 1:10 which is very good. Professors are very helpful here, they are ready anytime to seek our doubts, Also, they are very friendly. The teaching method here is very nice, we have regular tutorial classes, practical labs and theory classes. We also got to learn about few extra courses like welding, carpentry, foundary etc. in our first year. For our year, evaluation is based on the quizzes conducted almost every weekend. We also gave viva exams for few courses. Passing exams is not a very big deal here.
Internships Opportunities
As I am a first-year student, I don't have much knowledge about internships but from the data provided on the college's website, some top companies proving internship opportunities are Amazon, Microsoft, Adobe, Flipkart, Google and a few more. Students here are very enthusiastic.
Placement Experience
Many big companies visit campus for placements. Every IIT is good at placements. Google, Microsoft, Amazon, adobe are few top recruiters. Except for them, few PSUs also visit campus for placements. Students are eligible for placements after the 7th semester. For the year 2021 highest package offered was 70 lakhs and the average package was around 21.42 lakhs per annum. For the year 2020, the highest package offered was 1.5 crore per annum and the average package was around 20.62 lakhs per annum. In 2021, 444/584 (70.62%) students from B.Tech. and B.des. were placed, whereas in the year 2020 it was around 485/561 (86.45%).
Fees and Financial Aid
The cost to study here is neither very high nor very low. Semester fee including hostel and mess charges turns around 1,35,000 lacs means for complete BTech. In the course of 4 years, 10-11 lakhs can be the total spend. But it is definitely worth spending this amount here. Banks easily provide educational loans here. For SC/ST/PWD students tution fee of INR 1,00,000 per semester is completely waived. Also, for students with annual parent's income less than 1,00,000 lacs, the Tution fee is fully waived and for students with parent's annual income between 1,00,000 lacs and 5,00,000 lacs, 2/3 of the tution fee is waived. Also, there are few other scholarships based on the academic performance of all the students irrespective of category and financial conditions.
Campus Life
The annual fest of IIT Guwahati is Alcheringa and it is held in January every year. It is a 3-day event with a bunch of activities and events. Very famous personalities and singers perform in this fest, also there are various competitions for students. Techniche is the annual tech fest of IIT Guwahati and it is generally conducted around august every year. It is also a 3-day event with lots of tech activities. I can't say much about classrooms because of our 1st online year, but yes you can definitely assume them to be good. Sports facilities on the campus are amazing. we can see each and evry sport here. Few are swimming pool, indoor badminton court, lawn tennis court, basketball court, football ground, athletics ground and much more. Many clubs are here on various interests. Few are dancing, singing, acting, photography, music, designing, etc. Technothlon is an exam conducted by students of IITG for school students which are conducted every year.
Hostel Facilities
Hostels are very good here, they are quite spacious as well as clean. There is a total of 13 hostels out of which 2 are for girls, 1 married scholar's hostel, 1 hostel for both girls and boys (separated blocks) and the rest are for boys. Boys get single rooms with sharing bathrooms (3 of each for every 10 rooms on average) and girls have to share in double. Every hostel has its own TV room, sports room, reading room, stationery shop, juice centre, canteen, mess, laundry and everything you need for a hostel stay. Mess food is satisfying, it's very good as comapred to what we have heard about mess food. There is a weekly menu with a variety of food items which includes both Vegs and Non-Veg. When students successfully get registered for the program, hostels will be randomly alloted to them. You can also request to change hostel for any specific and genuine reason. Hostels are mandatory for IIT Guwahati.
