Life at St. Thomas'

I applied for B.Sc in Statistics and B.Sc in Microbiology in St. Xavier's College, B.Sc in Statistics in Ashutosh College, and I underwent the WBJEE counseling process. I got Microbiology in St. Xavier's and Statistics in Ashutosh College and I got B.Tech in CSE in St. Thomas College of Engineering and Technology. I chose St. Thomas because I preferred engineering over the rest two. And also, St. Thomas is one of the most reputed colleges under MAKAUT in the state. And we all know how prosperous and secure is the field of CSE now. Coming to WBJEE, one must be 17 years to give the exam and there's no upper age limit except for Marine Engineering, which is 25 years. After registering for the counseling of three rounds, one has to fill his/her preferences of streams and colleges in order of the highest preference to the lowest. As the counseling starts, according to rank, one of the preferences is allowed to him/her.

Computer Science and Engineering is the most prosperous branch of engineering right now. It gives us an edge in the corporate world and gives us the idea of how to solve problems around us with the help of technology. STCET provides only four B.Tech courses, so the faculty: student ratio is pretty healthy. Each and every teacher is well versed in his/her respective field. All of them have their master's degrees while many of them also have a PhD in their respective fields. Here, the student-teacher interaction is very healthy, and one can reach the teachers for one-to-one doubt clearing most of the time. This definitely provides a homely atmosphere. STCET is very strict when it comes to studies, so before every semester exam, two separate internals are held to see the preparation of the students. Not to mention, there are various assignments and class tests throughout the year.

From around the 6th to 7th semester, students become eligible for campus placements. Our college has a tie-up with Cognizant, which hires the major number of students from here. Companies like Infosys, ITC Infotech, Wipro, NRIFT, etc. also recruit from here. The average package lies around 3.5-4 LPA with the highest reaching up to 8-10 LPA. The percentage of students getting placed is very high here. Around 219 students were eligible in the last placement session, which is fairly high because there are only four streams or around 250 students. I will definitely sit for the placement but my main target is to go Master in Technology.(M.Tech)

Along with the admission fees and fees for the first semester, an approximate amount of 70,000 rupees is taken during admission. One has to also take the college uniform then. After this, around 45,000 rupees are needed for each of the rest of seven semesters.

An annual Tech Fest takes place around the month of February every year and a grand Farewell party for the fourth-year students is a major attraction. The library is easily accessible to the students and every student gets a set of his/her subject books for the whole semester. Also, one can borrow more books if he/she wants. Coming to the classrooms, the rooms are very spacious with a huge blackboard and also with a projector. Each classroom can easily accommodate a strength of around 75. Sports is a very important factor here. It has a fairly big ground to host any sort of sporting event like an annual football tournament, cricket tournament, overall sports tournaments, etc. Most of these are interdepartmental. There are also various groups and clubs if one wants to join and show interest.
