Shivaji College, BA, English Literature

Remarks

It was an amazing experience at Shivaji college. The 3years of education were full of fun and twists also. You will make some amazing friends here but just be careful about some. The management of the college is very lazy so you may need to get out of your comfort zones and help yourselves. Have fun and live this to be fullest. You will definitely miss these amazingggggg days.

Entrance Preview

For now the aspirants of B.A.Honors (English) need not give any entrance examination to take admission. The admission in this course, in Delhi University, are done completely on merit basis i.e, subject to your marks obtained in 10+2 exams.

Course Curriculum Overview

3

Although, Shivaji College is not considered as one of the prestigious colleges under Delhi University, there are certain courses in this college which are actually well-designed and focused upon. English Literature is also one of the best courses with excellent course structure and research processes. In the year 2017, the English department of Shivaji College arranged a successful conference explaining the North-Eastern literature and culture. Also, there are workshops organized on a broad platform concerning the authenticity of the course. Overall, the course structure under the research head is quite good in this college as it gives you the right amount of exposure to various pointers of society.

Internships Opportunities

Yes, the college do provide internships and placement offers to a few courses. Of course this is a backdrop as all the courses do not get a chance to participate in the placements. English honors is one of such courses which do not get the required internship offers. Companies like BPOs and Private banks come to the college for placements and internships but the eligibility is limited to the management students.

Placement Experience

2.5

Being a student of English Honors, i strongly feel that the job opportunities are not as good as expected. The students of Literature generally look for jobs of content writing, data research and teachings but these students only get to apply for the jobs in BPOs which is completely different to what they aspire.

College Events

4.5

1. Annual cultural fest of Shivaji college 2. Sports day 3. Annual day of college 4. Department Fests 5. Women's development cell Fest 6. Environment day 7. Independence day 8. Department Freshers 9. College freshers 10. Department Farewell these are the events celebrated in this college. Apart from this, different departments also arrange conferences and workshops for the students as well as for the teachers.

Fee Structure And Facilities

The fee structure is feasible in Shivaji college. As it is a Government college it doesn't prove to be a burden on your pockets. The annual fees generally goes from minimum of a 6500rs to 13000rs. A Government college keeps in mind the position of different sections of the society and keeps the fees demanded feasible.

Fees and Financial Aid

Yes the college provides you with some scholarships under usual Delhi University aspects. The scholarships are usually provided to the under privileged students and the ones with low annual income.

Campus Life

4

The overall environment of college is not very good. Every student expects certain amount of decency and friendliness from the college which is nowhere to be seen in this college. The crowd is really bad with usual cases of humiliation, eve-teasing and mocking reported to the principal. Teachers are always ready to help you in such cases but there is not much they can do because of the highly indecent crowd ready to pull your arms out of your body. Shivaji college has an amazingly organised set of cultural societies like VAYAM(dramatics society), FOOTLOOSE (dance society) and many more. similarly, there are other associations like women's development cell and NSS which helps the student in every aspect.

Hostel Facilities

3.5

There are no hostel facilities provided by the college. The migrants usually take up PGs and Rooms on rent near college. No hostel means no mess food. But there is a big canteen inside the college which provides you with some tasty and pocket-friendly food.

Alumni/Alumna

The seniors are very helpful in the college. There are no signs of ragging with any student. People personally cone to you and introduce them.( though these are just for election purposes). In a nutshell, the seniors of some courses are completely reliable.

Exam Structure

The Exam Structure is kind of similar to every college of Delhi University. Internals are not organised properly as they are not announced and there are no schedules made for the internals. Usually the lab classes are quite enjoyable and fun to attend. It lets the student actually enjoy the education.

Admission

First, you need to get yourself registered through the common registration form issued by Delhi University. You can fill the form online or offline. You can apply for admission in the desired college under Delhi University if and only if you meet the cut off introduced by the college. Different cut offs are introduced for students of different streams (commerce, science and humanities). The eligibility to take admission is changed and altered every year by Delhi University. Further, if you meet the cut off set by your desired college you will need certain documents for the admission process. The required documents are listed below: (students are advised to take originals as well as the photocopies of the documents) 1. 10+2 Marksheet 2. Migration certificate 3. Delhi University common registration form 4. 10th Marksheet 5. Provisional certificate 6. Character certificate 7. Passport size pictures Many colleges perform admissions by entrance exams also. Make sure you are well-equipped for the process.

Faculty

3

Honestly, i will rate the faculty of English Dept. of Shivaji college with a 3/5. Like there are always two possibilities to every situations, similarly there are good teachers and not-so-good teachers in Shivaji College. There are a few teachers who are willing to take the pain for their students and provide them with proper notes, files and everything. But, there are teachers who are least bothered about the performance of their students. The later category of teachers come to give lectures just for the sake of their attendance. In is clearly seen in their behaviors that they are not at all considered about the completion of the course. There were times when our course wasn't completed at all. Around one and a half of Novels were left untouched. I cannot say about the faculty of other courses but as far as i know, it is a partially good faculty here.

Placement Experience:

Placements are available in college, the drive is quite extensive, everyone is made aware of the choices and options and counselling is present too. It is from the third year, students are eligible to apply for placements. Companies and organisations take part such as Niti ayog, Times, Geostrata, Prajatantra foundation, etc. Those who desire usually work on their CVs, keep on doi internships and then get a placement. The packages are not that impressive to be honest.

The course is really very interesting. It keeps up with our expectations. Involves both practical and theoretical aspects to make sure that we are able to face the real world. Also, with the help of the guidance that we get from teachers we're able to ace both the aspects. The examinations also are based on applications, thus, helping us to enhance ourselves in all possibilities.

I got a seat in Ramjas College. It is a north-campus college. The infrastructure is too good compared to the remaining colleges. The teaching also going well but I faced some language problems. I'm from south India so I don't understand Hindi properly. But here mostly they teach in Hindi only and English is used very rarely.

Course Curriculum Overview:

The course itself is prestigious and is mostly opted for by people who plan either on preparing for the Civil Services or those who want to pursue academia. The course structure is framed in a manner that you don't just simply study history there, but you ingrain a critical viewpoint of a young historian. The faculty of History Hons. has some of the best Professors in the University, although you will in any course at any college find some teachers below your expectations, you don't have to bear them for more than 1 or 2 semesters. Passing the exams is not very difficult, but yes scoring above average is. If you get a GPA ranging from 6 to 7, you've performed fine. Above that is considered a Very good performance in Hons. courses of Social sciences at Delhi University. there are semester exams every 5- 6 months
