Remarks
To be eligible to give JEE Advanced you should have more than 75% in 12th boards or be in the top 20 percentile of your board exams. Furthermore, you need to be above the required percentile benchmark to qualify for JEE mains, generally 85-88%ile for the General category. To get into the IIT Guwahati BTech course, you need to clear JEE Advanced. I got into IITG Chemical Engineering by OBC-NCL quota in 2022 by securing 89 marks in JEE Advanced. You can find the application form on the JOSAA website after JEE adv has concluded. All the details are announced on the official website of Jose. Always be on the lookout for fresh news. Also to register for your chosen college you need 10th & 12th mark sheets, and a passport-size photograph. Your identity (aadhar, passport, driving license, etc), and category certificate if any issued by the central govt. And if you're availing economically backward quota then you need the income certificate and income affidavit. Personally, the admin process seemed fine to me.
Course Curriculum Overview
I chose this course because chemical engineering is one of the most chill core branches that are out there. It also provides ample opportunities for big petroleum companies, in pharmaceuticals, extraction sites, etc. Or you can take that free time and use it to code and go into the IT sector. About the faculty-student ratio for the first year, the course is the same for all the BTech students irrespective of the branch. That is because everyone should get a fair chance at branch change. So there is about 1 professor for each subject per 200ish students and 1 teaching assistant per 40ish students (for tutorials and such). All the faculty members are highly qualified and they have PhDs in their respective courses. Their teaching methods and style are amazing and the profs as well as TAs also take time out to clear your doubts (if you're willing to ask). About the term exams, they are difficult and have their standard. If you study you can easily score and if you don't study you can fail.
Internships Opportunities
I'm in 1st semester and it has been only 2 months since I joined so I don't know much about internships but here at IIT, you will get the best opportunities all the best companies in the world come here to hire. The internship companies prefer the higher branches first and then the core branches.
Placement Experience
I don't have a lot of info about the placements as I'm in the first semester only. But the biggest companies visit IITG every year. 1100+ offers were made last year and the avg package is 21.42lakhs as per last year. The highest of 2022 is 2.4cr international and 1.1cr domestic (from my hostel only). The majority of the students get placed here about 80-85% if you have a decent CPI there will be no problem in getting a good placement offer. I would like to get a good PPO in some big company. And after getting the degree I would probably work 1-2years and then go for higher education.
Fees and Financial Aid
In recent times the government has increased the price of the course to 3 lakhs per annum but there is still a concession. If you have genuine problems and are economically backward then there is OEB and MEB criterion. If your family income is below 1lakhs per annum you fall under OEB and you pay no course fee i.e paying 33k Or something a year. And if you have a family income of 1-5lakhs per annum then you get a concession of 66% of your tuition fee. I am currently a fresher so I do not know much about jobs and stipends.
Campus Life
The annual fest of IITG is Alcheringa which will be conducted in February from the 3rd to the 5th Feb. Our Tech fest is Techniche and it's the biggest tech fest in the NorthEast. It is conducted mostly by students and the attractions are mainly arranged by the students. Almost all books and generals needed are present in the main library. Even the hostel libraries contain a lot of books. All in all, there will be no shortage of books if you're there to study. The classrooms have all the amenities. There are two types of classrooms. 1) Digital and 2) Normal classrooms(with a blackboard and a projector). Now the digital ones have a charging port and all the things you need. While the normal one just has about 500-600 seats with a proper and clear vision of the board. There is no end to sports and activities you can do here. You have a full-sized ground for any sport you can name. Tennis basketball football volleyball squash table tennis badminton. App-->OneStop. Club---> E-cell. These are the major ones
Hostel Facilities
There is a LAN port in room 5 charging ports. 1 fan. 1 table 1 chair 1 cupboard. 2 beds. An attached shelf. And yes you need to share those things with your roommate, in the past single rooms were given but due to the bad infrastructure of one of the hostels (Dibang) this year double rooms have been given with the above-mentioned facilities. The food here is okayish. It's mediocre you won't like it more than your home but it is not bad. The menu is South Indian with breakfast for 4 days. Lunch is always the blandest meal. For dinner, you get chicken for 2 days and 1-day egg curry, Manchurian for 1 day. But don't worry the menu changes every month by popular poll. And there is a mess rating every month so if a mess is not providing good food they will be fined and can be removed altogether. There is no real registration required. Once you're enrolled in the college you're allotted the hostel by the college only. There is no locality where you can rent a Pg as it does not allow day scholars
