UPES, Dehradun Review

The fee structure is very hefty for someone coming from a middle-class family. Apart from that number of students in a particular branch keeps on increasing every year which results in distress during placements. There are way too many specializations in various courses that our college offers.

I got admitted in UPES on the basis of my performance in UPESAT (University of Petroleum and Energy Studies Admission Test). My rank was somewhere around 3600 in UPESAT'15. I chose UPES because they hold a very good reputation in the specialization I was interested in i.e., Automotive Design Engineering.

The overall course structure of my course is not so good academically with little focus on research related domain. It is not a broadly designed structure which lacks vast and diverse areas to explore in our respective domain and thus restricts us to wander our minds in knowledge.

Yes, our college does provide internships but only in the 3rd year of the respective B.Tech. program. An internship could be paid or stipend based which depends from company to company.

Placements of my domain were good till last year but this year not many core companies have visited the campus till now. The ones which have visited include; Hyundai, L&T, KPIT, Maruti and Suzuki. And many had to visit in the coming months. The average package for my course goes somewhere around 4-5 LPA (lacks per annum).Till now Maruti and Suzuki took 4 students from my course with an annual package of 6 LPA.

There is very less focus of the college management on the cultural and social events happening in the college. The cultural event called 'Uurja' organized in November for 3 days which includes social events, games, DJ night. 'Ignite' is the name of our technical event organized for again 3 days with less participation of students from various colleges this event comprises of technical and fun events.

The fee structure of our college is very expensive for someone coming from a middle-class family. Per-semester fee varies around 1.35 to 1.5 lacs depending on the course which excludes the accommodation and food expenses. Apart from that 20,000 INR have to deposit to the college at the time of admission in the name of security deposit.

A 25% concession on Tuition Fee is given for Uttarakhand domicile students on merit-cum-means basis. Condition of which include; The student should have done schooling & passed Class X and Class XII from Uttarakhand and he should be having a proper domicile certificate. Apart from the tuition fee are waived off for the university toppers only for their next semester.

There are many cultural and technical clubs present in the university while some are active throughout the year. Most of the clubs organize various technical and social events throughout the year The gender ratio in the campus is quite good with students from various states of India even some from other countries including Bangladesh, Nigeria and some from U.K.

The accommodation in the In-Campus hostels is very less thus, students have to live in private hostels with most of them being far from the main campus. The facilities in private hostels are good including rooms, transportation, and entertainment. While the food is manageable. The fee for a normal private hostel for a double-sharing room costs about 1,30,000 INR per annum.

The college alumni network is one of the strongest bonds which connect all the students into one platform. There is a healthy interaction with the seniors and most of them are helpful as in, providing help in studies and projects. The alumni also help by building confidence as for how to face the technical world and sharing their views in the technical environment. I had an interaction with a group of seniors and alumni who helped me to decide my project and shared their experiences in technical world as well as internships.

Exams happen twice in a semester comprising of Mid-Terms and Final-Terms with lab assessments in between. Most of the time exams are scheduled regularly on consecutive days excluding Saturdays and Sundays. Also, class tests are conducted regularly by the respective faculties for internal assessment.

Firstly, I gave UPESAT'15 then, I have attended their counseling process which was held in Delhi and Kolkata to chose the course of my preference on the basis of my rank. After choosing my preferable branch I have submitted a demand draft of 90,000 INR to confirm my admission.

Well, some of the faculties of my domain are highly specialized in their area of expertise with good knowledge of the course curriculum along with a good reputation over the years. While some are at the start of their teaching career not so reputation with lack of experience.
