Course Curriculum Overview

4.5

BA (Hons) Economics is one of the most well sought of courses in the entire University. It offers high placement offers and equips students with knowledge that is helpful in the real world. The syllabus can be vast, and therefore the students must be regular and consistent in their studies right from the start. The timing of examinations in DU can be problematic, as they happen in the extremely cold months of Dec-Jan, and extremely hot months of May-June. Gargi college in particular has well experienced teachers who provide the right support to their students, thereby making academic life easier.

Placement Experience

4

Students usually become eligible for placements in the beginning of their fifth semester. However with the change in educational policy that has allowed the students to choose between a 3/4 year program, there might be changes. Top companies like Deloitte, Accenture, EY, Justdial, etc have been regular recruiters. The number of offers made to students from humanities and commerce background is greater as compared to science students. The highest package made till now has been 21.5LPA, while the average is usually around 5-6 LPA. Overall, the college has a high placement rate.

Fees and Financial Aid

Economics hons at Gargi College is very affordable. We were charged a sum of Rs 15k (approx) for our first year. Being from Delhi itself, I didnt have to bear any other costs like accommodation, food, etc. Examination fees is usually under 2k per semester. The college provides financial aid to eligible students based on their proof of income. There is no campus employment that I have taken up in my time here. However we have an active placement cell that frequently floats information regarding internship/job opportunities.

Campus Life

4.5

Reverie is the annual festival of Gargi college, and is definitely the highlight of the year. This year it was in February, and we had students from across the university and even beyond it. Popular artist Nikhil Dsouza's performance in the college was a memorable experience. There are a total of 33 clubs and socieities in the college, ensuring an enriching opportunity for the students to grow. Gargi's sports field is one of the biggest across the uuniversity, and has well maintained courts for basketball, tennis, etc. We have computer labs and an air conditioned auditorium that can seat around 700 people. The student council is active, and we even had Hon. S Jaishankar visit the campus this year, which is surely one of the greatest memories the students will always cherish.

Admission

Admission in Economics hons in DU is based on CUET exams. Students are required to give the exams for one compulsory language, Maths (Applied/Regular) and two other subjects that they had in their class 12. One must regularly keep tabs on the NTA website for updates regarding the application forms, fees and exam dates. The application form was released around February this year. Overall the level of difficulty of the exams in my time was not as high as we were only the second batch to be giving CUET. However the low level of difficulty resulted in many people scoring high marks. NTA tried to balance it out by normalising the scores, which was a very problematic process as there was no transparency during the procedure, leaving students confused and baffled. There is also no uniformity of facilities in exam centers, and i have personally heard cases of invigilators verbally harassing the students in the middle of their exams. Discipline and execution must be improved.

Faculty

4.5

I am pursuing BA (Hons) Economics. There is only one section in our college for this course. We are a class of 60 students, and thereby the faculty to student ratio comes out to be 1:60 for each subject. The professors are kind, helpful and knowledgeable. They are very proactive in taking classes and are very approachable.

Placement Experience:

Placements are available in college, the drive is quite extensive, everyone is made aware of the choices and options and counselling is present too. It is from the third year, students are eligible to apply for placements. Companies and organisations take part such as Niti ayog, Times, Geostrata, Prajatantra foundation, etc. Those who desire usually work on their CVs, keep on doi internships and then get a placement. The packages are not that impressive to be honest.

The course is really very interesting. It keeps up with our expectations. Involves both practical and theoretical aspects to make sure that we are able to face the real world. Also, with the help of the guidance that we get from teachers we're able to ace both the aspects. The examinations also are based on applications, thus, helping us to enhance ourselves in all possibilities.

I'm from south India so I don't understand Hindi properly. But here mostly they teach in Hindi only and English is used very rarely.

Course Curriculum Overview:

The course itself is prestigious and is mostly opted for by people who plan either on preparing for the Civil Services or those who want to pursue academia. The course structure is framed in a manner that you don't just simply study history there, but you ingrain a critical viewpoint of a young historian. The faculty of History Hons. has some of the best Professors in the University, although you will in any course at any college find some teachers below your expectations, you don't have to bear them for more than 1 or 2 semesters. Passing the exams is not very difficult, but yes scoring above average is. If you get a GPA ranging from 6 to 7, you've performed fine. Above that is considered a Very good performance in Hons. courses of Social sciences at Delhi University. there are semester exams every 5- 6 months
