Course Curriculum Overview

4

My Course is Biotechnology. Overall the professors in my department as well as the seniors are very good and friendly to the students. Their method of teaching is Fantastic and quite engaging. I feel the course that is been taught to me is very relevant with respect to current world. Though the curriculum is tough but professors made it interesting for us. The laboratory and experiment facilities are in proper condition, although some equipments are not . The Building of Biotechnology is the best in the entire institute. Although the placement records are not very good here, but research facilities are excellent in this field. Exam papers are tough and frequency is also quite more. 4 major exams along with multiple weekly tests and CAs. I think the seniors in the department from masters and PhD should interact with juniors more properly and give them better hope and confidence for future and not demotivate them.

Campus Life

5

As a First-Year Student, These are my experiences. 1. The Festivals * Recstacy (Cultural Fest): * When: Spring Semester (typically April). * Your Role: This is the biggest event of the year. Expect 3–4 days of concerts, dance battles, and fashion shows. As a first-year, you will likely participate in "hall decorations" and inter-hostel competitions. * Aarohan (Techno-Management Fest): * When: Traditionally February/March (dates may vary). * Your Role: Organized by the Centre for Cognitive Activities (CCA). This is where you see robots fighting and hackers coding. It is a great place to start your technical journey. * Freshers' Welcome: * When: First semester. * Your Role: Department-wise or hostel-wise socials organized specifically to welcome you. 2. The Library. The Central Library is more than just books; it is a quiet refuge from hostel chaos. As a student, you can borrow textbooks for the entire semester from the Book Bank. This saves you the cost of buying books for Physics, Chemistry, and Math. The library has high-speed Wi-Fi and LAN. You get free access to major research journals (IEEE, Springer) and e-books, which you will need for your first-year assignments. 3. Classrooms & Labs: New Academic Block (NAB): Most first-year classes happen here or in the large Lecture Halls. These are gallery-style classrooms (stadium seating), ensuring you can see the board even from the back. 4. Sports and Extracurricular activities: The Oval & Lords: The Oval is the main ground for cricket and athletics. Lords is the football ground. SAC (Student Activity Centre): Contains the Gym and indoor games (Table Tennis, Badminton). Night Sports: The Basketball and Tennis courts have floodlights, so you can play late into the evening after classes. 5. Social Clubs: There are multiple clubs in the college for exposure of students accross multiple domains and field of interest. Some of them are: CCA,Literary circle, EDC, Spic macay,DC, MUC, GLUG, MNTC

Hostel Facilities

4

As a first-year student, I was provided Hall 11(Meghnad Saha Hall of Residence). Here are the Details: 1. Room Facilities & Accommodation Occupancy: We stay in triple-sharing rooms (3 students per room). It’s cozy but helps in making friends quickly. Furniture: Each of us gets a basic set: a bed (cot), a study table, a chair, and a shared cupboard/shelf space. Connectivity: Unlike some senior halls that rely on LAN cables, Hall 11 is equipped with Wi-Fi routers in the corridors, which is a lifesaver for our laptops and phones. Cleanliness: The rooms are handed over clean, but daily maintenance is on us. The corridors and common bathrooms are cleaned by the staff daily. The bathrooms are generally hygienic, though morning rush hours can get crowded. 2. Mess Quality & Menu: Overall Average... Menu Variety: The menu is decent and rotates weekly. Breakfast: Usually Bread-Butter/Jam, and a main item like Puri-Sabzi, Idli-Sambar, or Aloo Paratha etc. Lunch & Dinner: Standard Rice, Roti (sometimes hard/rubbery), Dal, one seasonal vegetable curry, and a non-veg item (Egg/Fish/Chicken) or Paneer/Dahi for vegetarians. Quality: It's "manageable." It’s not home food, but it’s edible. The Special Dinner (usually once a month or on Wednesdays) is the highlight—we get Fried Rice, Mutton/Chicken Kasha, Sweets, and Ice Cream. Night Canteen: We have a canteen inside Hall 11 that stays open late. It’s perfect for midnight hunger pangs, serving Maggi, Egg Toast, and Tea. 3. Registration Process & Affordability Process: The hostel allotment is part of the main institute admission process. We fill out a form, pay the fees online (via SBI Collect or similar), and submit the receipt at the Hall Office upon arrival to get our room keys. Hostel Seat Rent: Approximately ?12,000 - ?15,000 per semester (varies slightly by category/year). Mess Advance: We pay around ?14500. Overall accommodation and security was decent.

Admission

I applied for multiple NITs During Josaa Counselling but my top 5 suitable choice according to my home location and considering other limiting factors was NIT Rourkela, NIT Silchar, NIT Durgapur, NIT Patna and IIEST Shibpur. Apart from these, I have also Applied for Calcutta University and Jadavpur University. I have got approval from NIT DGP,Calcutta University and Jadavpur University. But I have chosen NIT because of better Placement records and better campus Life. Moreover it's an Institution of of National Importance and Hold a good NIRF rank. So I preferred this choice above others. I wasn't rejected from the above colleges, but simply i didn't get the eligible rank for them. And the 3 which I got, i choosed the best among them. The Admission process of NIT DGP was through Josaa and CSAB counselling. The College and the Branch will be alloted to you according to your rank in the JEE MAINS Examination. The Closing rank of this exam in 2025 of General Category for the lowest Branch in BTech is 63387. The overall admission process for the college, apart from hostel allotment, was completely online. 14-15 documents were to be submitted in pdf format in the specific website provided. The Process was overall smooth and Well Managed.

Faculty

Faculty members here are very Professional and quite Friendly with students. Their Teaching style is nice, some are par excellent. Although Most of the teachers like in the mechanics department are quite serious and not properly interactive or friendly with students often. They too are very serious and strict during copy checking. Our Maths Teacher Satya Bagchi sir is very friendly and chill Professor. His PDF of mathematics of 1st semester is excellent. My Physics Teachers are also Excellent and so as the Communication teacher. The Teacher of Electrical And Ecology Department are sometimes rude and unfriendly with students. Their copy checking is also very strict. Overall teh student teacher relation is good and I will rate it 8.5 out of 10. Student:Teacher=20.87:1. There are total 4 main exams in an year. 2 midsems and two endsems. Apart from this, there are multiple CAs and other tests. Exam Papers are quite on the Tougher side both in theory and practical exams. The course curriculum is 75 percent relevant wrt to current world according to me. Majority of students managed to pass the exams.

Night Life

3

Nightlife and Campus Culture at NIT Durgapur: 1. Lords and Ovals are the main evening hangout spots for walking, talking and relaxing after classes. 2. Nescafe kiosk and CCD are popular for coffee, group discussions and casual conversations till evening. 3. Open Air Theatre is used for club events, practice sessions or quiet sitting. 4. Junction Mall and City Centre are weekend escape spots for movies, food and a break from hostel life. Hostel night canteens are central to student nightlife, mainly for Maggi, egg toast and tea. Nights are spent gaming, doing LAN parties and practicing coding. Central Library usually closes by 8:00–9:00 PM, extended till midnight or 24/7 during exams. Gym and Student Activity Centre close around 8:00 PM. First-Year Restrictions: Hostel curfew for first-years is around 7:00 to 8:00 PM. Nightlife for freshers mostly stays inside hostel premises. Campus entry and exit at night is strict without permission.

The campus placements happen in final year of the course. There is a well established placement cell to conduct the on-campus placements. Many well renowned companies visit our college namely Microsoft, Google, TI, TSL, PWC, ICICI, ABG. L&T, etc. The highest package was 50LPA and the average was around 9LPA. Over 90% students got placed from across every department and details of the placement is also available in the college official website. I have gotten a job from the on-campus drive to a core company.

The placements of our college are below average. Studies for placement are more or less relevant from second semester. companies like tcs, amazon etc do visit our campus however very few are selected with package above 4-5 LPA. Most of the students seek out for higher studies and that's my plan too.
